Position Summary

This position will fabricate, assemble, install, and repair sheet metal, machined, and plastic parts and equipment, including metal air duct, control boxes, drain pipes, ventilators, flashing, hoods, pans, and related items. Set up and operate fabricating machines including power shears, power brakes, bending rolls, welding equipment, grinders, and sheet metal tools. Build ductwork involving transitions, connections, seams and joints. Fabricate, install, and maintain gutters, rain spouts, and rainproof heads on roofs. Inspect assemblies and installations for conformance with specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, scales and micrometers. Fabricate, form, machine, shape, and weld metals and plastic parts. Assist in, or perform work on other mechanical systems, as capable. Erect and work from ladders, scaffolding, boom trucks, and similar devices. Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and job specifications. Prepare detailed reports, recommendations, records, and similar information for supervisory and management use. Requisition materials and parts. Estimate time and materials to be used on the job. Stock, maintain, and may operate a University service vehicle. Collaboration and coordination with other trades, project managers, and customers. May staff a swing shift trouble truck and respond to a wide variety of service calls. Ability to identify and mitigate health hazards associated within the working environment.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
  • Completion of high school education or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
  • Successful completion of an applicable trade-specific Trades Helper program, or completion of an approved apprenticeship program, or an associate degree, or equivalent education/experience.
  • Five years’ experience in the trade that includes three years of experience in commercial heating systems installation, maintenance and troubleshooting and demonstrated ability to independently perform the duties and responsibilities of the classification, or equivalent experience.
  • Must pass an assessment or possess a Sheet Metal Journey Card to receive progression step increases at and after the 18-month mark.
  • Expert knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Expert knowledge of applicable building codes, rules, and regulations (local, state and federal).
  • Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.
  • Must furnish own tools.
  • Frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds.
Desired Qualifications

Experience using CAD programs to draw blueprints, shop drawings, and as-builts; experience working with vendor submittals to ensure the correct selection of materials and equipment to complete projects as specified; ability to perform air test and balancing on HVAC duct systems; Experience with the operation of commercial HVAC systems; ability to meet MSU standards for safe driving.

Work Hours

NON-STANDARD WORK HOURS: Monday through Friday first shift- 8:00am - 4:30pm - may require after-hours, weekend and holiday work.

Summary of Physical Demands

Carrying tools and materials to and from job site. Performs work from various types of equipment including scaffolding.

Summary of Health Risks

Wear a respirator (does not include a paper dust mask worn for comfort)

Work in noisy (at or above 85 decibels) areas

Operate a forktruck, tractor, or top-running overhead crane

Risks that have been identified by Environmewntal Health and Safety, such as exposure to lead, chemotherapy, formaldehyde, asbestoc, PCBs, etc.
