Position Summary

The Department of OBGYN at Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine is recruiting a Data Analyst to help support several research and evaluation projects within the Women's Health Research team. This position, while allowing for tele-work short/medium term, will be physically located in Grand Rapids, MI. The Data Analyst will join the Advancing Maternal Health Lab co-directed by Drs. Lee Anne Roman and Cristian Meghea and a vibrant group of well-funded women’s health researchers in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology. The Lab’s projects are in collaboration with multiple community partners, large health systems, the state health department, and other research partners

Our Lab’s vision is to create new knowledge to provide community-engaged solutions for improving the care and health of women and their children during pregnancy and after birth. It aligns well with the department’s vision to be recognized as a national leader in obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive biology. The department includes 26 faculty, with research foci across the women’s life course and translational science (T0 – T4) continuums. The Lab’s research promotes health equity and contributes to the improvement of care and health of underserved (Medicaid) pregnant and postpartum women. Currently Lab funded projects include a 5-year $4 million NIH grant, a $.8 million contract with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to support the improvement of care and health of Medicaid insured women in Michigan, and several other multi-year projects funded from federal sources.

The job requires:

  • Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Master's in Statistics, Economics, Epidemiology, Research Methodology;
  • Demonstrated advanced data management and analysis and statistical training (biostatistical and econometric methods in SAS, Stata, SPSS).
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
  • Three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in research design, statistical methods and knowledge of computer hardware and software;
  • One or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Master's in Educational Administration, Statistics, Economics or Research Methodology; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications

The data analyst position will work with complex data structures, and the analytic approach demands the attention of a data analyst who is detail-oriented and technically prepared to carry out the following tasks:

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Statistics or related discipline, including Biostatistics, Mathematics, or a social science field with a quantitative research emphasis.
  • Expertise in maternal and child health and health equity.
  • Ability to work independently, strong reporting skills for reports and publications, effectively communicate and collaborate in a team environment.
  • Proficiency working with large data sets including Medicaid claims, vital record, and census data, and electronic medical records. Abilities to link data from multiple data sources.
  • Experience working in collaboration with multiple community partners, state health department, and research partnerships. The Data Analyst will manage data from multiple health care and community program sites.
  • Overall database linkage and management tasks include: working with multiple community partners to pull appropriate data sets, troubleshoot problems, and identify solutions; linking data from disparate sources; running analysis to test completeness/accuracy of data; establishing project codebooks, protocols, and other products; developing and implementing timely and accurate data transfer and sharing of project data protocols (e.g. technology, agreements, and security mechanisms); maintaining and supporting functionality of reporting databases.
  • Variable construction and data analysis tasks include: preparing person-level data from claims-level data; constructing variables needed for reporting and analysis, including those from Medicaid claims and census neighborhood-level variables; preparing descriptive statistics with reports on data accuracy and missing data issues; conducting quasi-experimental analyses (e.g., propensity score models)
  • Reporting tasks include: monthly data pulls, cleaning, analysis, data reporting, and written reports for funders; monitoring and assuring data quality from multiple community partners; conducting analysis for quality improvement
  • Support and co-author scientific manuscripts, including designing and conducting the statistical analyses, generating publishable results, interpreting and discussing the findings
