Position Summary:

The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill announces a faculty position in veterinary comparative anatomic pathology. The successful candidate will become actively engaged as a comparative pathologist supporting researchers at the University of North Carolina (UNC). A component of the work will support the comparative pathology needs of the UNC Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) and Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC). Active areas of research focus at UNC include cancer biology, infectious disease, gastrointestinal disease, renal disease, and bioengineering, amongst others. While the primary duty of the position is to provide collaborative pathology expertise in on-going research studies, independent research will also be encouraged.
Duties will include:
Research- The successful candidate is expected to engage in collaborative research with investigators at UNC. These activities should support and foster extramural research grants and peer-reviewed research publications. Occasionally work may include collaborative investigative pathology studies with other universities and industries. Independent research projects may also be developed.

Teaching- Teaching activities may include, but are not limited to, training PhD students, post-doctoral fellows, veterinary pathology residents and laboratory animal veterinary residents in comparative anatomy and histopathology of laboratory animals. This faculty member will assist in teaching general and systemic pathology to graduate students at UNC.

Service- Academic service is expected to include, but not limited to, departmental, college, and university committees, professional organizations, and editorial and grant review panels. The successful candidate would be expected to take a leadership role in planning and performing diagnostic necropsies and associated histopathologic examinations related to scientific studies or occasional health issues in laboratory animals as required.

The animal care and use program at UNC is centrally managed by the Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) and reports directly to the Vice Chancellor for Research. More than 150,000 animals are housed in 26 animal facilities and used by faculty in the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health and Pharmacy, and College of Arts and Sciences. Representative species include mice, rats, other rodents, dogs, rabbits, ferrets, nonhuman primates, aquatics, reptiles, and amphibians. UNC-Chapel Hill is the fifth top-ranked university in the United States for federal research, totaling $1.1B annually. DCM employs more than 180 individuals including 8 ACLAM- or ACVP-boarded faculty veterinarians, 5 residents in laboratory animal medicine and veterinary pathology, and 10 veterinary technicians. This position will report to the Director of DCM.

Educational Requirements:

Qualified candidates will be licensed US-veterinarians holding a DVM/VMD (or equivalent degree); board certification by the American or European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP, ECVP) is required (highly qualified board-eligible applicants considered); a PhD in a related field is highly preferred.

Qualifications and Experience:

A demonstrated commitment to comparative and investigative or experimental pathology is required. The candidate must have excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, a collegial attitude, and a demonstrated ability to successfully work with other faculty, staff, and trainees.Pathology subspecialty expertise in a relevant field supporting the UNC research mission is favorable.
