Department Description:

The primary purpose of the Psychology and Neuroscience Department is to provide excellent education, research and service in the field. This goal breaks down into four important components: 1) to teach psychology to undergraduates in a manner that will introduce them vigorously to its broad scope; 2) to offer scientific and professional training to graduate students in the areas of behavioral neuroscience, clinical, cognitive, developmental, quantitative, and social psychology; 3) to carry out cutting-edge research in these areas, and 4) to provide consulting and administrative support services to the science and profession of psychology as well as to the university, the community, the state, the region and the nation.

The Department consists of six programs: behavioral neuroscience; clinical psychology; cognitive psychology; developmental psychology; quantitative psychology, and social psychology. Each program is designed to acquaint the student thoroughly with the theoretical and research content of the specialty and to provide training in the research skills needed to become a competent and creative investigator. In addition, the programs focus on the development of appropriate professional skills.

The Department of Psychology ranks 2nd in the College in grant funding with over $12 million annually in grant expenditures, and approximately $20 million annually in expenditures from all funds. The Department of Psychology has the largest undergraduate major in the College of Arts and Sciences with approximately 1500 majors, and one of the largest graduate Ph.D. programs with approximately 120 graduate students. The Department is also home to four community clinics which generate fee revenue (Adult Clinic, Anxiety Clinic, Child and Family Clinic, Couples Clinic), known collectively as the UNC Psychology Department Community Clinic (the Clinic).

Position Description:

This posting is for seven (7) positions and by applying to this posting applicants will be considered for all vacancies.

The Research Assistant in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience will advance the research of Dr. Sheridan, a leader in the Department’s Clinical Psychology Program. The research assistant will primarily contribute to one of the studies in the CIRCLE lab: (1) WHALE study (age range: 4-7 years old) – a funded NIH project examining the association between early adversity exposure and its impact on brain development, (2) STTAR study (age range: 15-20 years old) – a funded NIH project investigating how experiences in early childhood can shape brain development and outcomes in adolescence, or (3) YES study (age range: 9-14 years old) – a funded NIH project exploring how stressful life experiences affect brain development in adolescence and elucidating neural risk markers for self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (STBs).

Responsibilities for the current position include, but are not limited to, assisting with research protocol development, data collection, data entry, data management, and participant retention. This position is responsible for carrying out human subjects-related research following established procedures. The individual must be able to effectively assist with the recruitment and data collection. Data collection includes self-report, interview, behavioral, biological, and/or fMRI at UNC. This will require attending visits during ‘non-standard’ hours (evenings & weekends), however the work should take 40 hours/week. Additionally, the study may require driving off-site to other locations to meet study participants at their homes once home visits resume post-COVID.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

• 1-2 years of relevant research experience.

• Ability to travel offsite to other locations in order to meet study participants at their homes once home visits resume post-COVID.
