Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

Facilities Operations has the responsibility of providing a wide range of services to all administrative departments, student programs, and all academic schools and departments. Services include all aspects of corrective and preventive maintenance, operations, grounds maintenance, housekeeping, utility infrastructure maintenance and operations, business operations, safety, regulatory compliance, project management, and renovations. These duties are conducted for a campus consisting of over 100 buildings totaling 6 million gross square feet on over 275 acres.

Position Summary:

This position will be required to perform skilled work in the maintenance of Fire Extinguishing Devices, Fire Alarm and Life Safety Systems. This position may be assigned to a specific system or may work with multiple systems. Examples of equipment/systems maintained by this Tech include Fire Extinguishers and other systems as assigned. This requires knowledge of NFPA 10 and other life safety systems codes and standards. Most work is performed under direct supervision of the Lead Fire Alarm Tech.

Fire Extinguisher Inspection – 40% Maintenance of Fire Extinguishers and Life Safety Equipment – 30%
Repair of Fire Alarm Systems – 5% Record Keeping and Administration of all Testing and Inspections of Fire Extinguishers – 20% Safety and Health Management – 5%

This is a mandatory position as defined in the Adverse Weather and Emergency Event policy.

Minimum Qualifications:

HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR EQUIVALENCY; OR DEMONSTRATED POSSESSION OF THE COMPETENCIES NECESSARY TO PERFORM THE WORK. SOME POSITIONS MAY REQUIRE SPECIAL LICENSES OR CERTIFICATION. OPTIONAL GUIDELINES: EXPERIENCE IN THE TRADE AREA RELATED TO THE AREA OF ASSIGNMENT MAY BE SUBSTITUTED ON A YEAR-FOR-YEAR BASIS.

Key Responsibility:

Fire Extinguisher Inspection

Essential Tasks:

Perform monthly inspections of campus Fire Extinguishers as the requirements of NFPA 10. Assists others in facilities with fire alarm, life safety systems and sprinkler inspections, test and daily task assigned. Conduct detailed visual inspections and system functional test of various systems and equipment for reporting any deficiencies and corrective action recommendations to designated personnel.

Essential Tasks:

Performs replacement and/or maintenance, repair of fire equipment which will include portable fire extinguisher systems and components. Maintains work area and other areas in a clean and orderly condition. Performs basic maintenance and care of assigned vehicle. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Assist in the repair of Fire Alarm Systems

Essential Tasks:

Assist in performing emergency service, repairs and system outages as required to campus Fire Alarm Systems to ensure proper operation and correct levels of protection are maintained.

Record Keeping and Administration of all Testing and Inspections of Fire Extinguishers and assigned equipment.

Essential Tasks:

Completes all documentation associated with inspection and repairs of portable fire extinguishers and other Life Safety Systems in a timely and accurate manner and maintains proper documentation reference. This includes all inspection and repair documents, inventory and equipment locations.

Keep informed of current and future fire and safety codes applicable to fire extinguishers. Perform all activities in a safe manner with proper PPE. Keeps up to date on all EH&S safety training.
