Primary Function of Organizational Unit :

The postdoctoral scholar is responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific research in the discipline of coastal engineering, coastal and ocean science. Responsibilities include management of all aspects of the numerical modeling of coastal waves, extreme water levels and the impact of coastal ecosystems on flood extents and flood damages, assisting with generating new inter-disciplinary research ideas and contributing to the growth of interdisciplinary units at ECU: The Integrated Coastal Studies Program, which focuses on issues related to the continental margin resources, natural hazards, and coastal and marine health.

Job Duties :

Duties include: hypothesis development, literature review, collection of pilot data, report writing, and supervising of undergraduate research students and graduate research students, overseeing data collection procedures, supervising numerical modeling procedures, review of data for quality control, supervision of data entry/data analysis, analysis of research hypothesis using and the development of independent and collaborative presentations and publications. Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety, responsible conduct of research and human subjects training. Approximately 75% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to data collection, numerical model setup, processing numerical model outputs, spatial analyses and writing up of results. Approximately 25% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to managing the day-to-day activity of undergraduate and graduate research students in the laboratory.

Minimum Education/Experience :

English Proficiency;
Excellent written and oral communication skills;
PhD in coastal environmental engineering, coastal geology, or related field;
Expertise with numerical modeling of waves and water levels in coastal and nearshore environments;
Experience with GIS.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation :

None

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education :

Research experience in coastal engineering, coastal sciences or related inter-disciplinary sciences, with familiarity with theories and methods in coastal and nearshore processes. A track record of applying for and securing external funding. Experience working in multidisciplinary research environments and with programming languages (python, C++, Java, etc.) a plus.
