Job Description
Description:
A Postdoctoral research associate position is available under the supervision of Drs. Jian Sheng (Engineering) to conduct the research project recently awarded by the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) on developing a paradigm-shifting real-time cancer diagnostic technology that detects, enumerates, and characterizes the circulating tumor cell (CTC) in patient's whole blood using nanometer thin film optical sensor in microfluidics. This engineering postdoctoral position emphasizes on technology development, and focus on the pathology and physiology of CTC cells in circulatory systems.
The engineering postdoctoral fellow will be focusing on the further development of cancer diagnostic technology that integrates our patented novel metamaterial, thin-film optical nm-strain sensor, and continuous microfluidic technology.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the integration of relevant techniques into a bench-top system (an early version of the bench-top system has already been developed).
- Responsible for further development of an optical sensor to improve their sensitivity and accuracy.
- Performs validation experiments using blood sample spiked with 10 cancer cell line to demonstrate the feasibility, accuracy and sensitivity of the methodology.
- Develops and improves the data analysis methodology including recording, strain analysis, and numerical FEM modeling of nano-sensor.
- Cooperates with biologist and cancer clinicians to relate diagnostic measurement to pathological relevancies.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Doctoral degree Chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, physics or related (e.g. colloids, soft matters, fluid flow, circulatory system, soft matter).
- Experience in conducting independent experimental investigations on microscale transport phenomena (e.g. particle, cells in suspension) using microfluidic technology and associated investigative techniques including but not limited to microscopy, micro-scale flow measurement, particle tracking micro-rheology of a suspension, and high-speed imaging.
- Experience in optics such as interferometry, laser diagnostic techniques (not limited to fluorescent imaging).
- The ability in developing the new data acquisition and analysis software in Matlab, Labview, C++, or other common platforms used in the lab.
- Past credentials in developing experimental techniques.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Understanding of flow (CTC in whole blood) structure (sensor) interactions.
All positions are security-sensitive. Applicants are subject to a criminal history investigation, and employment is contingent upon the institution's verification of credentials and/or other information required by the institution's procedures, including the completion of the criminal history check.
