Technology Scouting Manager, SCALE Initiative

Job description

Technology Scouting Manager, SCALE Initiative
University of California Los Angeles

Requisition Number: 33138
Salary: $4,283 - $10,400 monthly

Position Description:
SCALE is a joint initiative run by Starburst and UCLA, federally funded by the EDA Venture Challenge, and backed by industry and authorities across the greater Los Angeles area. SCALE is designed to inspire a generation of students, entrepreneurs, and investors to pursue entrepreneurship for the development and advancement of novel technologies with aerospace applications and to build businesses here in Los Angeles.

The initiative will provide an ecosystem for the creation of startups looking to transition (spinout) research and development of novel and disruptive technologies developed in the UCLA Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department, as well as other research institutions in the region, to the market.

The Technology Scouting Manager is responsible for scouting, sourcing, and identifying potential startups to join the SCALE program. This position prepares market research reports, helping SCALE companies research market size, needs, gaps, competition, and revenue potential. Incumbent works with SCALE companies to prepare presentation materials, facilitates UCLA-industry partnership opportunities, and assesses startup technology viability and fit for the SCALE program. Responsible for partnering with SCALE program/startups to identify additional funding opportunities, and assist startups in applying for grant funding or research sponsorship. Oversees and takes full accountability of the master database with regular reviews to ensure the best startups are being considered by industry leaders

The program is remote during the COVID-19 pandemic but will be hosted in Los Angeles once it is safe to do so. Los Angeles has a deep-rooted aerospace heritage, local world-class universities graduating more engineers per year than anywhere else in the nation, and a leading venture capital presence; with SCALE, it reinforces the region as a global capital for aerospace startup development.

The UCLA Technology Development Group serves as a campus-wide gateway to Innovation, Research and Entrepreneurship. Our mission is to promote UCLA innovation, research, teaching and entrepreneurship to benefit society; create economic value to support UCLA's scholarly and educational missions and the State of California; and lead UCLA's research community to bring innovation to market.

Starburst is an innovation catalyst in the aviation, aerospace and defense industry. It is the first and only global aerospace accelerator, connecting startups with corporates, investors and government, providing growth and investment opportunities for all. With offices in Los Angeles, Paris, Mumbai, Munich, London, Tel Aviv, Montreal, Seoul, and Singapore, the team has built an ecosystem of key players with 7,500+ startups in its network.
