Job Summary
  • Position Title: DCHC Mental Health Nurse Coordinator
  • Supervised by: Director of Nursing and the MH Regional Manager

  • Supervises: MH Nurses and Nurses that work in MH
  • Minimal Qualifications:
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Georgia
  • Preferred 1-year management experience with at least 1 year of experience in correctional nursing
  • Current American Hearth Association BLS certification
  • Security clearance by the Georgia Department of Corrections and Augusta University
  • Desirable Qualifications:
  • Preferred degree: BSN or Associates Degree in Nursing with a BS in Administration or related field
  • Preferred 2 years management experience
  • 3 years of experience as a Mental Health Nurse
  • CCHP - MH
  • General Responsibilities:
  • In conjunction with the MH Regional Nurse Manager and the Director of Nursing, coordinates mental health nursing care for the MH nurse team members. Practices daily active visibility at the facility to monitor the care being delivered and respond to staff needs. Plans, directs and evaluates patient care activities to assure optimal care. Maintains professional dress and action according to GDC and AU/DCHC policy and procedure; assures all staff maintain appropriate professional dress.

  • Duties:
  • Supervises the activities of the MH nurse team members
  • Aids in hiring, discipline and termination of MH nurses
  • Coordinates assignments of MH nurses
  • Coordinates orientation of all new MH nurses
  • Assesses skills and offers training for all MH nurses annually
  • Ensures schedules are completed and nursing coverage is provided for the CSU units per policy
  • Provides oversight through monitoring activities, participating in CQI, and completing mandatory reports
  • Provides staff support when needed in the direct delivery of nursing care
  • Physical Effort:
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs
  • Normal bending, reaching, stooping
  • Sitting and standing for long periods of time
  • Must be able to move quickly across the compound in cases of emergency
  • Normal levels of hearing and seeing, if necessary, with corrective appliances
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Organization and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work under pressure, must relate well to patients, security staff, visitors and co-workers
  • Knowledge of the Rules and Regulations regarding the practice of nursing in the state of George (Georgia Nurse Practice Act)
  • Flexibility and adaptability in dealing with sudden changes in schedules and/or work environments
  • Knowledge of OSHA, NCCHC, ACA, TJC and other regulatory patient and safety standards
  • Ability to exhibit leadership, characterized by substantial and continuous responsibility and accountability, for integrated programs that cross service and/or discipline lines, influencing the organization’s mission and health care delivery.
  • Demonstrate positive communication skills, sharing information clearly and concisely.
  • Display the ability to foster positive working relationships with management and leadership across all disciplines as well as with nursing at all levels
  • Sound written and verbal communication skillsUnderstanding of Mental Health disorders, their signs and symptoms, current preferred treatments, complications noted.
  • Knowledge of current formulary and methods of obtaining exceptions.
