The Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania - located in the beautiful Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia - is one of America’s oldest arboretums. We are seeking an experienced, full time Horticulturist with a passion for plants and public horticulture to join our team. This position is responsible for the physical maintenance of the Arboretum. This position is responsible for design, installation, care, and maintenance of plants and landscape features to the highest standard of excellence. This position regularly interacts with guests, occasionally teaches for the Arboretum’s Education Department, and helps maintain accurate plant collection records. This position also supervises interns, seasonal employees, and volunteers.

Duties
Duties include: planting, formative pruning, staking, fertilizing, irrigating, frequent inspection of plants for cultural or pest-related problems using accepted IPM strategies and subsequent treatments (pesticide application and/or cultural treatments). Other duties include, developing and planting annual flowering displays, lawn care, weed control, debris removal, mulching, and other practices which enhance presentation and plant health.

  • Is an enthusiastic ambassador for the Arboretum and the University though positive and helpful interaction with guests, members, staff, students, and donors.

  • Participates in garden development, plant selection, and planting of his/her section in consultation with the Director if Horticulture.

  • Coordinates pruning of large trees with the Chief Arborist.

  • Teach courses in the Arboretum's Education Department for amateurs and professionals. Participates as an instructor in training programs and field trips for interns and staff. May publish articles and lecture on horticultural topics to both the general public and professional audiences.

  • Occasional weekend work required.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Associate’s Degree or Two-Year College equivalent is required, Bachelor’s Degree in horticulture or related field strongly preferred. A minimum of three years’ experience in professional horticulture is required, experience at a public garden greatly desired. Teaching and writing skills highly desirable. A valid driver’s license is required, experience operating machinery preferred. Must be able to lift 50 pounds, work outside in all weather, walk, stand, and stoop for long periods. Must be able to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator License upon employment. Salary commensurate with experience.
