Job Description Summary
The Research Specialist will work on projects investigating the impact of genes on animal brain integrity. Techniques involved include Drosophila husbandry and genetic crosses, molecular genetics for RNA, DNA and chromatin isolation, dissection of animal tissues with immunostaining, histochemistry, among others.

Job Description

The ideal candidate will be a researcher with experience with Drosophila genetics. Will work on projects investigating the impact of genes on animal brain integrity. Techniques involved include Drosophila husbandry and genetic crosses, molecular genetics for RNA, DNA and chromatin isolation, dissection of animal tissues with immunostaining, histochemistry, mong others. The research specialist will be expected to master techniques and independently perform experiments, analyze data, and prepare data summaries. They will also work collaboratively in the laboratory. The successful candidate will have a strong experimental technical skill set plus expertise in writing, presentation and data analysis.

Research Specialist A:

(1) conduct studies in Drosophila genetics, select appropriate genetic progeny and maintain Drosophila stocks; (2) tissue acquisition and processing of Drosophila head and brain tissue for analysis of RNA, DNA, and protein;(3) performing molecular genetic studies including RNA isolation, realtime PCR, western immunoblotting; (4) performing histology and immunohistochemistry on various tissue including the brain; (5) analyze specific Drosophila crosses for effects in various tissues, including in lifespan and by molecular genetic analysis and tissue processing/histology; (6) keeping laboratory chemical and supply inventory and ordering supplies as needed. Additional responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: (1) assisting with set up of laboratory-related aspects of new research studies; (2) maintaining laboratory reports, detailed protocols and regulatory documents, and (3) other tasks as needed such as for laboratory maintenance.

Research Specialist B:

(1) conducting complex studies independently in Drosophila genetics, selecting appropriate strains and selecting appropriate progeny of genetic crosses; (2) tissue acquisition and processing of Drosophila tissue for molecular genetic analysis including RNA isolation, western immunoblots, realtime PC, immunoprecipitations; (3) performing histological and immunohistochemical experiments on various tissues including the brain; (4) maintaining Drosophila stock lines and creating new stocks; (5) analyze various Drosophila crosses for effects in various tissues, including in lifespan and tissue processing/histology; (6) keeping detailed laboratory notes, assembling reports and preparing data analysis for development of presentations and reports on research; (7) keeping laboratory chemical and supply inventory, and ordering supplies as needed. Additional responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: (1) training new laboratory members in key techniques; (2) assisting with set up new research studies; (4) maintaining logs, laboratory reports, detailed protocols and regulatory documents, and (5) other tasks as needed such as laboratory maintenance.

Position is contingent on continued funding.

Qualifications:

Research Specialist A level:

Bachelor's Degree and 0-1 year of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Strong technical skills, organizational skills, written and oral communication skills are required. Experience with Drosophila genetics or other model organism genetics preferred.

Research Specialist B level:
Bachelor's Degree with 1-2 years of related experience in Drosophila and/or molecular genetic and sequencing research, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Strong technical skills, plus strong organizational, written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work independently are required.
