Equipment Operator 3rd Class, Central Plant - Georgetown University Planning & Facilities Management

The Equipment Operator 3rd Class, assigned to the Night Shift, assists in the operation, monitoring and maintenance of Central plant equipment consisting of 3 gas/oil fired boilers, standby emergency generator, 9 industrial centrifugal chillers, and a thermal storage tank system.

The Central Plant consists of various equipment types, each requiring different operating sequences and/or repair methods.

Plant team members include steam operators, mechanics, electricians, and controls specialists, along with contractors for water treatment, fuel delivery, plant supplies delivery, maintenance, and repair technicians.

Reporting the Shift Operator, the Equipment Operator 3rd Class has duties that include but are not limited to:

  • Assists operation/maintenance of all Central plant equipment.
  • Responds to distribution system of steam, condensate, chilled water, domestic water to campus and hospital; and maintain steam purity and water quality of systems through chemical treatment and monitoring of water chemistry.
  • Performs start-up/shutdown procedures of plant equipment and machinery safely and according to training and written procedures
  • Checks chemical analysis of boiler, condensate return, chilled water and condenser water system; and adjusts chemical treatment to specified ranges established by chemical treatment company.
  • Records and monitors equipment operating conditions and reports or adjusts as required to maintain safe and efficient operation.
  • Participates in repair, maintenance, installation and upkeep of all Central Plant equipment and work areas.
  • Reviews operational manuals, technical manuals and plant procedures.

  • High school degree or GED
  • 3rd Class DC Steam Engineers License
  • CFC certification
  • At least 3 years of training or experience in trade practice of steam engineering
  • Ability to operate intuitively from previous knowledge in troubleshooting gauges and instruments on equipment to bring about satisfactory operation
  • Ability to understand and operate complex operation of high pressure steam and chilled water systems which can be operated several ways depending on operational needs.
  • Ability to learning, understand, and evaluate equipment conditions and the operation same
  • Ability to employ effective communication skills among supervisors and fellow workers

The Equipment Operator 3rd Class is designated an emergency employee, reporting to work on time in the event of severe weather conditions, regardless of whether the University is closed or operating on alternate schedule, and participating in snow removal operations if assigned.
