Job Description:

The Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics is seeking candidates for a Biological Scientist II position. This position will independently contribute to the design and execution of multiple research experiments investigating treatments for muscular dystrophy.

Responsibilities to include:

  • Cell Culture and Cellular Biology
    Independently design and perform research experiments investigating the mechanisms of cell motility; perform transfections in adherent and suspension SF9 cultures and generate and isolate baculovirus; cell culture techniques including mammalian cell culture, SF9 insect cell culture, baculovirus tittering and infection, and protein purification preparations; Immunofluorescence; TIRF and confocal microscopy.

  • Microbiology and Protein Chemistry
    Plan and conduct advanced research projects including maintain constructs, viruses, and proteins; design and implementation of gene cloning strategies (both restriction enzyme based and homologous end joining), AAV expression; design and perform experiments related to protein purification, perform recombinant DNA techniques including isolation and purification of plasmid DNA and genomic DNA, restriction enzymatic analysis of DNA, PCR, qPCR, bacterial transformations, agarose gel electrophoresis, and transformation; Protein Biochemistry including density gradient centrifugation, protein purification, SDS-PAGE, Western Blotting, ELISA, and cell motility; Research techniques in analytic chemistry including HPLC, fluorescence spectrophotometer, atomic absorption spectrophotometer.

  • Research Project Coordination and Lab Management
    Serves a liaison between PI/Director, lab staff, and collaborators within as well as external to UF. Coordinates special studies or projects as directed; responsible for coordinating activities of all ongoing research projects. Directs lab staff to aid in experiments including train other laboratory personnel in techniques needed for advancement of research in the lab; provides consultation, guidance, and troubleshooting for others in the laboratory related to various aspects of lab techniques and procedures. Responsible for the complete understanding and compliance with all required laboratory regulations such as ACS, EH&S, IACUC, UF, State and Federal guidelines Maintains accurate records and legal documentation required by institutional policies such as biological, chemical, and radiation safety policies. Manage ordering process to ensure efficient and cost-effective use of grant funding; maintain lab supply inventory to ensure supplies are available for scheduled research projects; researches and evaluates new products, compares and negotiates vendor prices.

  • Scientific Writing and Dissemination
    The Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics is seeking candidates for a Biological Scientist II position. This position will independently contribute to the design and execution of multiple research experiments investigating treatments for muscular dystrophy. Analyze data and assemble results for scientific publications, grants, and conference presentations; assist in preparing data for scientific manuscripts, abstracts, grants, and other documents; manage accurate and complete laboratory research records and prepares daily written reports of experimental results; assists laboratory research with searches for and review of scientific literature relevant to the research focus of the laboratory. Aides in the development of new research and laboratory protocols.
Expected Salary:

$44,700 - $46,000, commensurate upon education and experience

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Extensive experience with sterile cell culture of mammalian and SF9 cells.
