POSITION SUMMARY

This position will be assisting senior lab members in support of academic research projects.   

Initial work will be done off campus. This work will include processing of videos and behavioral data using machine learning tools, data analysis and assistance in the software development for a behavioral system used by the lab. Experience with tracking tool AlphaTracker is highly preferred.

In addition, the intern will be trained by a senior lab member to execute behavioral experiments. This will include daily handling of mice, setting up the behavioral rooms for specific experiments and then executing those experiments independently.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Lab Support (10%)

  • Responsible for the preparation and stocking of reagents, research chemicals, stocking of consumable items, routine lab cleaning and upkeep.
  • Occasional mice handling experiments.

Assists with specific research projects as described below: (90%)

  • Video and behavior data preprocessing using machine learning tools
  • Data analysis of previous collected experiments, including histological and behavioral data using specialized software and tools
  • executing behavioral experiments
  • use of confocal and widefield microscopes to capture histological images

EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • No professional experience required

Preferred:

  • Prior experience with AlphaTracker machine learning tool

EDUCATION

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent work experience
  • Some college level neuroscience courses

Preferred:

  • Undergraduate major in neuroscience or equivalent coursework

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Required:

  • Punctual, meticulous and rigorous in completing an assigned task. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with computers, both Windows and Linux operating systems.

Preferred:

  • Experience using python based open sourced video processing tools such as AlphaTracker and DLC.
  • Theoretical knowledge of biological sciences.
  • Proven organizational and time management skills to successfully set priorities, meet established deadlines and recognize new problems with changing priorities and interruptions.
  • Highly organized, effective at multitasking and adept at juggling changing priorities.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and discuss research materials.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills utilizing sound judgment, tact and a recognition of situations requiring confidentiality.
  • Ability to diplomatically and professionally interact with all levels of Institute staff and external contacts.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with PC and Linux operating systems, standard business office equipment and commonly used software and tools, such as Microsoft Office, electronic mail, and the internet.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.
  • Satisfactory completion of the Institute’s background investigation.
  • Must be willing to sign a confidentiality agreement
