PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB: The primary role is to assist with management of student external support needs including mental health, social support, and crisis intervention.

 

 

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: 

The Peer Training Coordinator assists the office of Student Engagement and Campus Life with student external support needs; including monitoring a team of student peer mental health trainers. Particular attention is given to administering holistic student resources including crisis management and intervention.

 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • The Peer Training Coordinator assists in shaping policies, programs and services that support the overall success and wellness of Kentucky State University students.
  • Reports to Dean of Students
  • Assesses and coordinates student wrap around services for residential and commuter students; assists in securing internal and external resources not limited to food pantry, emergency funds, community resources. 
  • Assists the Dean with educational programming including mentorship, restorative education,
  • mediation, intervention and student training initiatives.  

  • Promotes student success and facilitates an optimally respectful and inclusive campus environment; deeply engaged in student advocacy.
  • Serves as a liaison throughout the division.
  • The Peer Training Coordinator may serve as a member of the University’s emergency response team and works with the Student Engagement and Campus Life leadership team to coordinate the Division response to mental health crises, trauma, and alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct.  
  • Understands principles of conducting investigations with confidentiality, including interview methods and techniques with an appreciation for social justice and principles of cultural competence.
  • Serves as a member of the Campus Assessment Response and Education - Behavior Intervention Team (CARE-BIT).
  • Assists with managing student files, reports, data, and records; assisting with managing and training for software tracking system.

    OTHER DUTIES: Perform related duties as assigned. 

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Master’s degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Student Personnel Administration, Social Work,Sociology, Social Science related field or completion of some graduate course work; Bachelor’s degree required.

    Minimum of two (2) years of higher education experience.

  • Strong interviewing and report writing skills
  • Knowledge and practice of student development theory
  • Ability to multi-task successfully
  • Strong technology skills including proficiency in web-based software systems
  • Self-starter with drive, innovation, creativity, and infectiously positive attitude

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:   This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities. 

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
