Veterinary Assistant I, Large Animal Clinical Sciences

Temporary Full-time

The College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a Veterinary Assistant I to provide quality care for animals by performing a variety of functions including but not limited to general care, feeding, bathing, and exercising.  The incumbent ensures USDA, AALAC, and IACUC standards are maintained and maintains accurate animal and sanitation records as requested. Performs sanitizing in all areas of the hospital and farm in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures. Transports animals, assisting in moving animals to designated areas as needed.  This is a temporary position.

Typical Responsibilities

Provides animal husbandry.  Cleans and sanitizes animal stalls, including rebedding stalls and sanitizing all stall hallways and treatment and unloading areas at the Large Animal hospital and Veterinary Research and Education Center (VREC) as needed.  Performs laundry duties for Large Animal Hospital and VREC, folding and putting away laundry items.  Assists in teaching lab at VREC when needed as duties in hospital permit, transporting animals if needed.  Bush hogs field and fencing as needed.  Assists clients with the loading and unloading of animals, maintaining equine and farm animal loading area at VREC and hospital, including floors and walls.  Prepares specialty stalls (sand-padded) after surgery for recoveries or new arrivals at VREC and hospital. Trains UT student assistants to work safely in the large animal hospital and VREC.  Drives all equipment at VREC and hospital including bobcat, tractors, pull trailer, livestock and others.  Transports animals, including deceased and live animals.  Assists with after-hours large animal drop offs as required. Provides general maintenance of gates, chutes, and equipment.  Stocks hay, straw, and bedding in all areas of the hospital. Loads and unload hay as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent.  Must be at least 18 years of age.  Must have a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

One year of large animal experience.  Trained and tested regarding biosecurity, sanitation, zoonotic disease, and isolation protocols.  Certified in forklift operation, surgery table operation and lift and crane training. Certification in medical waste management, IACUC, AAALAC.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed:

General knowledge of animal behavior.  General knowledge of housekeeping to include cleaning and disinfection.  Knowledge of safety procedures.  Good verbal and written communication skills.  Ability to handle, restrain, and engage in physical observation of large animals.  Ability to maintain confidentiality.  Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.  Ability to operate heavy including forklift, platform lift, tractor, truck and trailer.  Ability to jog a horse in hand for lameness exams.  Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. without assistance.


Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays.  This position is considered essential; employee is required to report to designated work locations to ensure operation of essential campus functions during an emergency or when the University has suspended or delayed operations.
