SSDS is a part of the Center for Interdisciplinary Digital Research (CIDR), the Stanford Libraries center of excellence for data and software support serving the needs of social science and humanities researchers across the University.

Job Purpose:

The Head of SSDS will continue the long-running success of SSDS as a university-wide service for data-driven research scholarship while growing CIDR’s capacity as a hub for digital and computational research support. In collaboration with other members of CIDR, the successful candidate will support this mission through campus-wide outreach efforts as well as the development of in-house and Library-supported services that address the increasing need for data science support. The successful candidate will work strategically with relevant Library staff, including software developers, data and metadata librarians, digital library teams and subject specialists to provide Stanford researchers access to a wide range of research materials including: structured quantitative data, texts, scholarly publications, geo-spatial data, special collections and archival materials including web archives, as well as materials published via emerging forms of scholarly communication and other materials. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing broad support for traditional and computational analysis of these materials, including data management, data analysis and workflows, ethical considerations, and by organizing workshops, tutorials, and consulting.

The candidate will play a key role within the Libraries to coordinate text and data mining services and the management of data assets and act as local resource for questions coming in from other public facing Library services.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Assist with providing leadership within CIDR and lead SSDS in the support of data and software needs for social science and humanities digital research projects. Oversee or provide assistance in the direct integration of technology into research projects.
  • Lead the development of resources, workshops, tutorials to disseminate information about the uses of technology in research. Organize CIDR’s workshop series and coordinate drop-in consulting to train scholars on digital techniques, tools and software (e.g. Stata, R, Python, TDM environments), including emerging digital tools that will advance their research and provide the technical expertise necessary to enhance the Library’s contributions to faculty and student research projects.
  • Actively encourage and support the introduction of new disciplinary tools for data discovery, management and analysis to researchers or students, assisting them with the tools, disseminating knowledge of these tools throughout the university, and creating and supporting an infrastructure that allows use of the tools in research.
  • Develop strategies for collaboration, program design, and support for digital research projects. Conduct environmental scans in conjunction with subject librarians to identify current and emerging areas and methods of research as well as scholarly projects for which digital tools and methodologies are appropriate.
  • Recruit, manage and mentor graduate student consultants within SSDS.
  • Collaborate with curators, selectors, and digital research specialists in support of interdisciplinary collections and services and in identifying and managing digital library projects and initiatives.
  • Stay abreast of educational technology research and participate in academic conferences.
  • Facilitate a culture of diversity and inclusion around data and software services and practices.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree plus four years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience

Other Relevant Education & Experience May Include:

  • Masters or PhD in a Social Science or Humanities discipline, plus five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Expertise in utilizing technology to enhance teaching and research.
  • Ability to define and solve logical problems for technical applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to express course material and pedagogic goals through the imaginative application of technology to existing materials and structures.
  • Ability to plan, design, develop and evaluate engaging multimedia learning/training objects.
  • Experience with delivering applications in a networked environment.
  • Excellent teaching, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively and tactfully with members of the academic community; demonstrated experience working in an environment with colleagues of diverse backgrounds and customs.
  • Demonstrated expertise with instructional design methodologies, pedagogical issues and best practices for classroom, online and hybrid learning.
  • Excellent time management and project management skills. Demonstrated ability to manage a complex workload, prioritize tasks and use good judgment in providing services based on goal.
  • Expert knowledge of Macintosh and Windows environments, and facility with Unix.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering technical training to a non- technical audience.
  • Expert knowledge of learning management systems and various classroom and online learning technologies.
  • Excellent customer service skills, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build strong working relationships with a diverse audience of faculty, staff and students.

Other Relevant Knowledge, Skills and Experience May Include:

  • Substantial knowledge of and experience in academic or research libraries and the university research environment.
  • Experience in leading a group of library professionals supporting data and computationally intensive research.
  • Experience building and maintaining communities of practice in a technical or research setting.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Python and/or R, Jupyter or other notebook environments.
  • Experience with traditional and emerging social science and digital humanities research methodologies preferred, including quantitative and qualitative methods using software packages such as Stata, SPSS, NVivo, AtlasTi, as well as analysis of unstructured data, machine learning and NLP applications.
  • Experience in providing assistance to students and faculty in the design and execution of research projects preferred. Evidence of the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated practice of effective pedagogy and teaching experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in finding and using a wide variety of resources to include print and digital texts, social media data, numeric data, and/or special collections and archival materials.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively and collegially with library staff as well as with faculty and students is required. Ability to perform effectively in and contribute successfully to a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible workplace environment.

Physical Requirements*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.
  • Rarely writing by hand, use a telephone.
