The Division of General Internal Medicine and The HoPingKong Centre, Toronto Western Hospital (TWH) University Health Network, and the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto, are seeking applications for the inaugural Dr. Herbert Ho Ping Kong Chair in Ambulatory General Internal Medicine (GIM) at TWH. The successful candidate must be a General Internist eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with the position description of clinician teacher or clinician educator at the University of Toronto. This is a five-year, renewable once, joint University of Toronto and University Health Network endowed chair. The position start date is July 1, 2021 or a mutually agreed upon date.

Established in 2020, the Dr. Herbert Ho Ping Kong Chair in Ambulatory GIM honors its namesake, Dr Herbert Ho Ping Kong, retired Internist. Herbert is an award-winning physician-educator, whose practice at TWH over 30 years influenced a myriad of learners. A major theme during his illustrious career was the advancement, revitalization, and promotion of the resurgence of general internal medicine on a national level, largely accomplished through the emphasis and role modeling around the excellence of general internists as educators and administrators. In fostering the role of academic general internists, he emphasized the importance of bedside teaching, evidence based medicine, and humanistic care. He believed that the clinical teaching environment enhances practice and improves patient care, and his support of advancing medical education and fostering the next generation of academic ambulatory general internists will live on through this Chair.

The G. Raymond Chang Complex Medicine Teaching Clinic is dedicated to improving ambulatory care in GIM, enhancing the training in new models of care provided to trainees, and promoting scholarship in ambulatory care. Over the past three years the Clinic has garnered significant local recognition for innovative clinical, educational, and scholarly accomplishments. The Clinic has focused on enhancing the patient experience and providing timely access to comprehensive GIM services, while educating the next generation of GIM trainees in ambulatory care.

The successful candidate will be expected to integrate, build, and strengthen the educational program within ambulatory care at Toronto Western Hospital. The role will involve active leadership, both in designing clinical learning experiences, and in supporting fellows and early career clinicians, promoting high-quality educational scholarship and skill development in ambulatory practice. The Chair holder will work closely with the G. Raymond Chang Professor in Ambulatory GIM Education to advance the strategies and vision of the collaborative program and will take an active role in ambulatory clinical practice. The Chair holder will also establish collaborations, leveraging the expertise of members of The HoPingKong Centre, the Division of General Internal Medicine, UHN, and beyond.

The Chair holder will have a record of sustained excellence in teaching and education. They will have a successful track record in educational scholarship, with a national reputation in their field encouraged. The successful candidate will have experience in ambulatory care practice. Additionally, they will bring with them strong administrative, collaborative leadership, and interpersonal skills. Fundraising skills and experience would be an asset.

Clinical activities and compensation to be negotiated with the Department and Division heads.
