The Health and Wellness Centre (HWC) provides inter-professional medical, health promotion, and counselling services in a safe, accessible, equitable and culturally responsive environment to optimize the students' personal, academic and overall well-being. We strive to enhance services to students through collaborative partnerships on campus and in our community.

Within the Health and Wellness Centre, the incumbent is a member of the medical care team. Working under the direction of the Manager, the Medical Team Lead supervises the work of the nursing team and coordinates activities of the physician team. The Medical Team Lead provides clinical leadership to other members of the nursing team, is a resource to Primary Care Nurses for technical and procedure questions and supports the Manager to ensure all clinical governance and compliance with the College of Nurses Standards are met in the clinic. The Team Lead assists with Medical Directives, and is responsible for ensuring the nursing team keeps up to date on new medical protocols, procedures, and equipment maintenance. The Team Lead also provides nursing care and support for students through direct nursing intervention, the scope of which includes: triaging patients presenting with a variety of medical and mental health needs; offering direct care to ill or distressed patients; coordinating referrals and tests ordered by physicians; providingvenipuncture, injections, and general first aid; dispensing medications; reviewing test results; assisting physicians during examinations and procedures; and providing health education to patients.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assessing the physical and mental condition of patients to determine medical needs
  • Resolving problems that have been referred by other specialists
  • Overseeing day-to-day operational needs of the unit (Medical Services)
  • Screening and making referrals to appropriate resources and services
  • Providing detailed health information to patients
  • Following rules and procedural processes related to Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA)
  • Providing orientation to others on work procedures and practices
  • Directing a small group in a limited area, including responsibility for scheduling and/or workflow

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Nursing or acceptable combination of equivalent experience. Must be a Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Minimum 6-7 years of recent clinical experience, including minimum 1 year of recent supervisory experience in a leadership or charge nurse role.
  • Experience in a primary care setting with post-secondary students, transitional aged youth/young adults or emergency room is required
  • Must have current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification, and automated external defibrillator (AED) training
  • Venipuncture experience is essential
  • Experience with electronic medical records is required
  • Must demonstrate excellent clinical knowledge and skills including physical assessment, strong teaching and counselling abilities
  • Knowledge of the practice of evidence-based nursing in a primary care setting combined with a genuine interest in young adults

  • Excellent communication (verbal, non-verbal & written) and interpersonal skills are required. Possess communication skills that include active listening, open mindedness, empathy, and respect, delivered with clarity and concision.
  • Strong nursing assessment skills with an ability to develop nursing diagnosis
  • Excellent time management skills, with ability to work well under pressure and tight time lines
  • Strong knowledge of the standards of nursing practice and their application to a community practice setting
  • Understanding and adherence to privacy and confidentiality under Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA)
  • A demonstrated and genuine commitment to providing inclusive care for all students
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team are essential


Assets (Nonessential):

  • Prior experience developing written instructions, procedures and medical directives
  • Prior experience with scheduling and determining clinic coverage needs

Hours of Work:


The hours of work for this position are Monday to Friday from 8:45 am - 5:00 pm for 3-4 days per week and 11:45 am - 8:00 pm for 1-2 days per week.
