The School of Dental Medicine has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Dental Dispensary Assistant position.

Job Summary:

The Dental Dispensary Assistant is responsible for assisting students, faculty, and residents with supplies and instruments for all patient care activity and/or preclinical activity. Responsible and accountable for inventory control of supplies, equipment, and dental instruments. Responsible for maintaining equipment, including minor repairs of equipment. Responsible for assisting with the collection of dirty instruments and assisting with the processing of these instruments. Responsible for the upkeep and order of storage rooms to ensure proper ordering of supplies needed for clinics and to maintain the integrity the supply inventory system. Responsible for maintaining supplies in all clinics, dispensaries and clinical labs.

Decision Scope: 

    Determining what instruments will be needed in the clinics.  Makes recommendations on instrument/equipment repair or replacement.Judgment is used by studying the patient information to identify what means of dental assistance the resident/faculty member will need when providing the patient treatment.  Identifying this level of need serves as guidance for determining what the specialized instruments setups will be.Deciding which type of materials to use for impressions, fillings and other dental procedures.  Must stay up to date on any new materials or instruments available and/or new requests or needs of the faculty
Communications:

Interaction with students, faculty or staff on a daily basis to meet the demands of clinical and educational operations. Strong communication skills and problem solving skills for dealing with a variety of personalities and various levels of stress at times.

Working Schedules:

    Position may be assigned weekend and/or evening shiftsPosition may be assigned a 4/10 work week schedule
This position is located in the Dental Faculty Practice and the primary function is non-chairside dental assisting work.                                        

Examples of Work Performed:

Clinic Support – 50% (Essential Function)

    Cleans and decontaminates and provides maintenance of instruments and equipment according to established procedures and techniquesEnsures proper functioning of equipmentCleans sanitizing machines and equipment.  Maintains a level of sterilized instruments for distribution.
Instrument Preparation – 35% (Essential Function)

    Issues sterile reusable instruments to operatories and clinical unitsCollects used instruments and moves them for sterilization Prepares specialized instruments set-ups for residents, faculty and undergraduate students to be used during dental patient treatment.
Monitoring Supplies and Materials – 10% (Essential Function)

    Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies, equipment and materials for the clinical area of responsibility.  Maintains a comprehensive knowledge of dental materials, their use, maintenance and storage. 
Clinical Education Support – 5% (Essential Function)

    Support the educational mission of the SDM, including role modeling and coaching students how to function as a dental assistant in both four-handed chairside activities and in clinical operations support. 
Other Duties – (Non-essential Function)

On occasion, this position may be assigned other duties needed to help drive to the vision, fulfill the mission, and uphold the organizational values of CU Denver/Anschutz and the SDM.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $41,600 - $45,760

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years of dental assisting experience
  • Must possess current valid CPR and/or BLS certification
Substitution: Successful completion of an accredited dental assisting program may substitute for one year of experience. NOTE: If exercising the education substitution, applicants MUST attach a copy of their dental assisting certificate to their application materials no later than the closing date listed in the announcement.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a fast-paced dental environment 
  • Experience with clinical area preparation in a dental clinic and/or office. 
  • Experience working with students and faculty in a higher education and/or academic medical environment
Competencies/Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to establish rapport with a wide variety of individuals

  • Ability to work independently and exercise judgment in decision making

  • Knowledge of dental terminology and instrumentation  
  • Knowledge of current dental materials, tools and instruments, and proper use and technique  
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level, knowledge, and proficiency in all phases of dental assisting 
  • Familiarity with OSHA and HIPAA guidelines
