The School of Dental Medicine has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Instrument Sterilization Technician position.

Job Summary:

The purpose of this work unit is to perform all sterilization on instruments and equipment to be used by students, residents and faculty in performing patient care.

This position has responsibility for the cleaning and decontamination of all instruments and equipment according to established procedures and techniques; ensuring proper functioning of equipment and cleaning the sanitizing machines and equipment. In addition to the sterile processing functions, this position will build inventory cassettes and instruments and disburse the sterile reusable instruments to the clinical units and provide oversight of the collection of used and disbursed instruments to begin the sterilization process.

Decision Scope: 

    Determines the appropriate processes for instrument sterilization Monitor sterilization process to determine if properly completed. Determine order of processing to ensure supply of instruments meets the demand of the respective clinics. Determine order of special instrument needs.Determining which instruments go into each setup for each department or specialized unit. Knowing what is needed and making sure that the students and faculty have the correct instrumentation according to schedules.

Interaction with students, faculty or staff on a daily basis to meet the demands of clinical and educational operations. Strong communication skills and problem-solving skills for dealing with a variety of personalities and various levels of stress at times.

Working Schedules

    Position may be assigned weekend and/or evening shiftsPosition may be assigned a 4/10 work week schedule                                            
Examples of Work Performed:

Instrument and Equipment Sterilization – 85% (Essential Function)

    Cleans and decontaminates instruments and equipment according to established procedures and techniques.Ensures proper functioning of equipment.Cleans sanitizing machines and equipment. Maintains a level of sterilized instruments for distribution.Issues sterile reusable instruments to the clinical units.Collects and reprocess reusable patient care instruments.  Collects dirty case cart from all clinical floors and transport to main decontamination.  Transports sterile instrumentation to all clinical floors via case cart.Prepares specialized instruments set-ups for undergraduate students, residents and faculty to be used during dental patient treatment.
Instrument Distribution – 15% (Essential Function)

  • Issues sterile reusable instruments to operatories and clinical units; collects and resterilizes used instruments. Prepares specialized instruments set-ups for undergraduate students, residents and faculty to be used during dental patient treatment.
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the unit to include:  scheduling, directing work of others, providing input on performance evaluations

On occasion, this position may be assigned other duties needed to help drive to the vision, fulfill the mission, and uphold the organizational values of CU Denver/Anschutz and the SDM.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $35,652 - $39,324.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is eligible for overtime compensation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience in sterilizing dental and /or medical instruments and equipment, which included at least one year of experience preparing specialized dental instrument setups.
Substitution: Completion of a Sterile Processing Certification program OR a Dental Assistant Certification may substitute for the general sterilization experience, but not for the one year of specific experience with specialized dental instrument setups.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification either as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) from the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) or as a Sterile Processing and Distribution (SPD) Technician from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).
  • Experience working in a centralized sterilization laboratory.
  • Experience in all stages of the sterilization process, including decontamination, preparation and packaging, storage and distribution.
  • Experience sterilizing medical or dental equipment where sterilization duties consist of at least 50% of position’s assigned duties.
Competencies/Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of all areas in the Dental Reprocessing and Distribution.
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills
    Exceptional attention to detail, the ability to troubleshoot and verify the accuracy of workAbility to work independently and be a part of a teamKnowledge of current dental technologies and materials
