Department Summary:

The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs; www.NamUs.gov) is a national information clearinghouse and resource center providing investigative and forensic support to missing, unidentified, and unclaimed person cases. Fully-funded by the National Institute of Justice and managed through a cooperative agreement with the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification, all NamUs services and resources are provided at no cost.

Position Overview:

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS POSITION IS CONTINGENT UPON THE AWARD OF GRANT FUNDING AND IS EXPECTED TO TERMINATE ON OR BEFORE SEPTEMBER 30, 2021.

The Center for Human Identification Department at the University of North Texas Health Science Center is seeking to hire a Biometric Technician to join our team. Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Contact criminal justice agencies, dental offices, military record repositories, and other sources to obtain biometric information (primarily fingerprint cards and dental records) related to missing persons and unidentified decedents.
  • Arrange shipments of biometric records, to include Federal Express labels and packaging.
  • Scanning and uploading digital biometric records to NamUs case files and/or securely transmitting biometric information to NamUs subject matter experts.
  • Compile statistics related to NamUs forensic services for inclusion in monthly and bi-annual program performance reports.
  • Respond to telephone and email inquiries to NamUs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and one (1) year of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to utilize standard office equipment such as computers, scanners, secure file transfer software, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel. The selected candidate must obtain a Department of Justice Public Trust security clearance to perform the duties of this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

  • Prior criminal justice experience or experience working with sensitive medical/criminal justice information is preferred.
  • Ability to create spreadsheets, charts, and graphs utilizing Microsoft Excel.
