Department Summary:

The UNT Dallas Learning Commons offers tutorial assistance and supplemental instruction in various tutoring subjects (math, writing, statistics, science, etc.) to students who need supplemental academic support outside of the classroom. The front desk student assistant works under the supervision of the Learning Commons Program Manager and Administrative Coordinator, and works closely with the tutors employed in the Learning Commons.

Position Summary:

Duties may include, but are not limited to:
•Answering basic phone calls and replying to email inquiries regarding the functions of the Learning Commons
•Assisting students in scheduling appointments for the Learning Commons and overseeing tutor appointment schedule; encouraging students to be prepared for their appointments
•Meticulous record keeping, file management, and organization for the Learning Commons
•Devising fliers, signs, and other marketing material for the Learning Commons, as well as completing some scanning/imaging as needed
•Interpreting and clarifying Learning Commons procedures to faculty, administration, staff, students, tutors, and visitors
•Maintaining contact and liaison with other University offices, administrative officers, and executive officers of external agencies
•Assisting coordinator with special assignments, projects, and events
•Aiding coordinator in developing and maintaining organization and staffing plans (peer tutors, meetings, training)
• Attend and complete mandatory trainings.

Student employees assigned to this classification work under general supervision. This means that definite work objectives are set for the employee but methods of performing the tasks are frequently left to the judgment of the employee with occasional instruction or advice provided by the supervisor. The frequency of review by the supervisor depends on the difficulty and complexity of the assignment or on the impact or result of the work performed. While the supervisor is again responsible for the general assignment of work, less control may be exercised over the flow for work and instructions given may be more general in nature. The employee is responsible for the results of the work. Jobs assigned to this level usually require some previous experience, education, or specialized skill.

Minimum Qualifications:

Currently enrolled UNT Dallas or UNT Dallas College of Law in good standing and making satisfactory progress toward completion of a degree or certification program. Applicants must possess the following:

  • Must qualify as work-study eligible.
  • Excellent customer service skills, as well as effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office computer applications (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Some knowledge of office practices and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural and social backgrounds.
  • Responsible, reliable and punctual.
  • Ability to learn assigned tasks readily, to adhere to prescribed routines, and to develop some skill in the operation of common office equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Ability to work under considerable pressure, to adjust to constant changes, to handle multiple tasks, and work with all kinds of students.
• Skill in telephone etiquette and courteous communication with public, verbally and in writing.
