Description:

The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Florida invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant In or Associate In as a Doctor of Optometry (OD) to provide patient care and education in an academic medical setting. There is immediate opportunity to engage in a busy tertiary clinical practice in an established longstanding department with a brand new, state of the art clinic building and optical shop. The incumbent will work with current faculty to provide a training environment for medical students and residents. Duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • communicating with patients to get detailed case histories
  • examining the eyes of patients of all ages to detect signs of injury, disease, abnormality or vision defects
  • checking for signs and symptoms of general health conditions (e.g. diabetes)
  • issuing prescriptions for glasses or contact lenses
  • fitting and checking prescribed lenses in order to correct vision defects
  • offering advice and reassurance about vision-related matters
  • providing preoperative and postoperative care to cataract patients, as well as to patients who have had laser vision correction or eye surgery
  • triaging vision-related problems and referring to an Ophthalmologist in appropriate subspecialty when needed
  • liaising with other medical practitioners and sometimes sharing the care of patients with chronic ophthalmic conditions
  • administering, organizing and planning the development of a prompt, patient-friendly, and cost-effective clinical practice
  • liaising with sales representatives from vision care product suppliers

Salary and rank will be commensurate with credentials and experience. The College of Medicine has an active faculty compensation plan, which includes incentives and bonuses. Employer will assist with relocation costs.

Qualifications:

Qualifications, in addition to clinical expertise, include a strong commitment to teaching, resident training, and research as well as participation in academic activities.

Requirements include completion of an approved accredited school or college of optometry. Must obtain and/or maintain a current Florida optometric license. Must be able to obtain medical staff credentialing with UF Health facilities as well as qualify for enrollment with third party billing entities.
