The Department of Surgery is currently seeking a Sr. Medical Assistant. The incumbent in this position does patient clinic flow, obtains vital signs and patient information for inclusion in patients electronic medical record such as medication, medical and surgical history. Administers injections or treatments, performs routine laboratory tests, and assists in other patient care activities which include but are not limited to dressing changes, drain removal, suture and staple removal. Prepares treatment room for examination of patients and for office procedures. Sets up all supplies and/or sterile trays needed for visits. Assists with physical examinations and handing instruments and materials to the doctor as directed. Provides patients with basic instruction and information regarding examination procedures, obtains consents for procedures. Provides patient education, ASPS consents, pre-op instructions and any additional information as needed. Places orders for imaging studies such as X-Rays, ultrasounds, MRI’s, mammograms, etc. and routes requests to physicians to sign. Assists with requests of FMLA, return to work, Short Term Disability, Home Health Care orders, and other forms requested by patients. Cleans and sterilizes medical instruments while observing the principles of sterile technique. Update of instrument sterilization log daily. Preforms weekly and monthly maintenance for autoclave. Cleans patient rooms, stocks, changes biohazard bags and checks/changes sharp containers ensuring rooms are ready for the following clinic day. Schedules patients for tests and completes required forms for laboratory work. Prepares clinic for the following day making sure all information needed such as pathology reports, imaging reports, labs/culture results, etc. are available for physicians at time of patient appointment. Keeps up with daily clinic logs such as AED, refrigerator temperatures, eye wash station, etc. Maintains accurate and complete patient records and documentation. Triages and answers daily incoming phone calls and emails to optimize patient care. Routes calls/emails properly when needed. Calls in prescriptions to pharmacies as directed by physicians, Orders, stocks, and inventories supplies, inventories of medication. Escorts and transports patients to various hospital locations. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
The minimum qualifications for this position are as follows: High school diploma or equivalent education is required. Medical Assistant diploma, HIV certification and CPR are required. Three years of experience is required.
