Eastern Michigan University houses over 3500 students in 11 residence halls and has 550 apartments in four complexes. The University enrolls approximately 24,000 students, including more than 5,700 graduate students and has five colleges, a graduate school with more than 50 graduate programs, a Division of Continuing Education, and is the fourth-largest university in Michigan. Eastern Michigan University is conveniently located approximately 10 minutes east of Ann Arbor, 45 minutes west of Detroit, 20 minutes west of Detroit Metropolitan Airport and 50 minutes north of Toledo, Ohio.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

In cooperation with an Complex Director, coordinate and implement a comprehensive program for 250-400 residents in one-two residence halls or apartment complexes that will enhance their academic, career, social and interpersonal success. Some specific duties include: supervising, training, and motivating staff of 5-10 Resident Advisors, assessing resident needs, and monitoring Resident Advisor programming budget. The Graduate Hall Director also assists the Complex Director in the implementation of administrative responsibilities including, but not limited to conduct, on-call crisis response rotation, and manages hall operations in the Complex Director's absence.


A bachelor's degree is required. Prior experience in programming for undergraduate students and at least one year of residence hall living experience is required. All Graduate Hall Directors must be full-time, degree-admitted graduate students at Eastern Michigan University in the Higher Education Student Affairs program or related program. Strong undergraduate academic record and excellent interpersonal skills are required.

Supplemental Information

Stipend includes a tuition waiver for nine credit hours for both the fall and winter semesters, and a $7,524 academic year stipend. A furnished apartment or suite, meal plan during term of employment, cable, and local telephone service are also provided. Summer employment & housing may also be available.

For a full-time GA appointment, the University provides a tuition scholarship for up to 18 credit hours in each academic year (September 1 to August 31) of the assistantship.

For graduate assistants who are appointed to part-time positions and for GAs who begin employment after the start of the semester, the number of credit hours covered by the award will be prorated.

The report also contains fire statistics for any fires occurring in an On-Campus Student Housing Facility during the three most recent calendar years.
