Advertised Job Summary:

The Reference Librarian participates in staffing the reference desk; teaches introductory legal research in a required first-year integrated research and writing course, and may participate in the teaching of an advanced legal research course; contributes to the development and updating of curricular materials; conducts library orientation tours and delivers bibliographic lectures and resource consultations; participates in collection development; creates research guides, tutorials, displays, and other resources in furtherance of the Law Library’s mission to support the educational activities of the Law School and the University, and to facilitate public access to legal information; and engages in other special duties and projects, as assigned. This position reports to the Associate Director for Library Operations and works as a team member within the reference department, as well as within the legal research instruction program. Successful applicants will have the following: strong teamwork and service orientation; ability to work with all library patrons and colleagues in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner; self-motivation with the ability to work collaboratively and independently; ability to exercise sound professional judgment; strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to locate and disseminate legal information in print and electronic formats; interest in teaching and ability to make effective presentations to groups.

Specialized duties: This position will focus on the library’s efforts in the area and support of access to justice and social justice. The librarian’s duties may include: being the point of contact for research training for the Clinics, Pro Bono Program, and Children’s Law Center; providing research support for law school projects involving access to justice and social justice; continuing the management and development of the Circuit Riders legal research outreach project; developing and implementing outreach initiatives for the library’s public patrons; and collaborating with the state and local bar associations on projects to serve the legal information needs of the public.

Required Education and Experience:

J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and M.L.S. or equivalent degree from ALA-accredited school.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in classroom teaching. One or more years of public service/reference experience, preferably dealing with the general public. Interest in access to justice and social justice issues.
