University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is currently seeking a Laboratory Research Assistant to join the Hertzano Laboratory (https://www.hertzanolab.org/), at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology–Head Neck Surgery within School of Medicine. The Department is a research-intensive department, ranked 10th in the USA for funding of Departments of Otolaryngology. The laboratory is located within the Institute for Genome Sciences of the UMSOM, at the newly built Health Science Facility III at the heart of the UMSOM campus.

The Hertzano laboratory studies the molecular basis of hearing loss and works to develop new treatments to prevent and treat age related and noise induced hearing loss. The ideal candidate is an ambitious and organized individual, with experience with working with mice. Experience in molecular biology and neuroscience is helpful. The candidate must be a team player, think critically, and must possess excellent oral and written communication skills. The candidate needs to be comfortable and interested in data analysis including basic statistics.

**This is a FULL-TIME, CONTRACTUAL position**

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

    Perform routine laboratory maintenance and research activities such as: general housekeeping, preparing solutions, media, stains and buffers; tissue fixation/sectioning; DNA extractions, etc. Perform advanced laboratory activities such as: animal surgery, microscopy techniques, imaging techniques, recombinant DNA techniques, protein purification, in situ hybridization, etc. May participate in the design of research studies.  Learn and perform physiological analyses of hearing such as Auditory Brainstem Response testing, Vestibular Evoked Potentials, and measurement of Endocochlear Potentials.  Learn and perform in vivo viral gene delivery to the inner ear.  Assist with literature research, editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication.  Perform professional and administrative duties such as: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory personnel; assisting in developing policies, procedures and/or methods for laboratory experimentation; and ordering supplies.  Perform other duties assigned. 


Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry and/or related field.

Other: May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation. May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.

Hiring Range: Commensurate with education and experience (Low to mid $40K)
