Job Description Summary
The Product Development Laboratory (PDL) within the Center for Cellular Immunotherapies (CCI), seeks to hire a Research Project Manager B (working title: Product Development Scientific Manager) to oversee multiple product development and research projects related to improving gene/cell therapies. The Project Manager will supervise technical staff and report directly to the Director of the Product Development Laboratory (PDL). This person will be responsible for assisting in duties related to the oversight and conduct of the laboratory activities. Managerial and hands-on responsibilities comprise supervision of staff and student trainees as well as process development activities. These include review of data, trouble-shooting, instrument operation and advising the Directors on ways to improve operational efficiency while maintaining robustness, overseeing the proper training of staff, monitoring progress and timelines, contributing to manuscript and grant preparation as well as presentation, addressing interim problems as they arise and management of technology transfer from the development to the implementation teams. This individual will assist the Director of PDL in strategic development and plans leading to the discovery and clinical translation of new cellular manufacturing processes. Additional administrative responsibilities include reviewing and signing-off on product/process validation reports, managing and tracking multiple study budgets as well as compiling IND data packages and the timely submission of these documents to the Directors. The Product Development Scientific Manager will meet regularly with team members to ensure the proper and timely execution of projects, and with study leadership to provide updates, but will function independently in carrying out most responsibilities involving the support of early phase cell and gene therapy clinical trials at the University of Pennsylvania and collaborating institutions. In addition, this person will be expected to participate in collaborations involving cutting-edge cellular manufacturing process/product improvements. Maintaining an understanding of emerging concepts is required. This individual will also perform hands-on laboratory experiments related to cellular product development as needed. Finally, the Product Development Scientific Manager will undertake cross-functional engagement with multiple functional units within CCI, including, but not limited to the Clinical Cell and Vaccine Production Facility and Translational Science Operations for advancing new processes/ cell therapy products to the clinic.
Job Description
Responsible for both strategic planning and day to day management of complex and broad range of projects conducted with collaborators both internal and external to Penn. With mentoring from the Principal Investigator, the Research Project Manager will take leadership role in developing study protocols, writing grants, managing the detailed operations of projects, analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, cultivating close relationships with community partner organizations, and drafting/editing manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journal. He/she will help develop the team's research strategy and will have ample opportunities to lead projects and co-author papers. Will be required to ensure that studies/research are conducted safely and according to protocol, provide supervision to educators and teams conducting the study/interventions and collaborates with peers from other Universities and funding agencies. Will also be responsible for coordinating grant applications and interacts with funding administrators and the University Business Office. Provides significant contributions to presentations and manuscripts, including multiple drafts for review and dissemination. Plays a primary role in other dissemination activities related to project findings.

Understanding of manufacturing and product development as it relates to gene and cell therapy. Prior experience working in large, complex organizations such as the University of Pennsylvania. Prior experience with managing complicated research projects with multiple sub-teams of researchers.
