The Division of Student Life at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Director for Event Services, Student Union. This is an exempt, 12-month, full-time, non-tenure track staff position.

The Division: The Division of Student Life is comprised of over 400 staff that serve our students through 19 departments and functions. Staff are actively engaged in the lives of our students, living and learning with them in our residence halls, student union, and other campus environments. The Position: The Student Union is a comprehensive department that provides an array of facilities and services in support of the University’s mission. The Assistant Director for Event Services serve as a member of the Union leadership team, overseeing event services areas including, allocation of event space/resources, room set-up/arrangement, and building management team to ensure successful production of all events within the Union.  This role interprets, communicates, and enforces University and Union policies as related to event services and production, coordinates with Union staff, Aramark, Facilities Services and other appropriate partners to successfully and safely implement events.  

The Assistant Director for Event Services supervises 40 plus student staff consisting of student building managers and room set-up crews, as well as one University full-time staff (one non-exempt administrative specialist.) The Assistant Director plans and implements ongoing training and assessment of assigned staff to ensure quality, inclusive customer service, and meaningful developmental opportunities for staff. This role schedules all staff in event service areas to ensure operations throughout the academic year and summer.

The Assistant Director shares weekend and evening staffing responsibilities for special events (home football games, Orientation, major University events, etc.).

Required Qualifications:

Education: Master’s degree in education, student affairs, business administration, or related field. Direct and relevant experience working with multi-functional facilities; Experience building collaborative partnerships.

Experience: 3 years full time experience in facility management to include supervision experience.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
    •    Ability to work with diverse constituencies; 
    •    Ability to prioritize multiple work responsibilities in time-sensitive situations;
    •    Ability to work with limited supervision, supervise and delegate work to student staff;
    •    Ability to exercise good judgment, handle different situations with confidence and leadership, and be flexible;
    •    Knowledge of facility and event management;
    •    Knowledge of PC and MAC operating systems, and Microsoft Office suite;
    •    Knowledge of the role of, trends, and best practices related to student union operations, facility management, event management; 
    •    Knowledge of event management software; 
    •    Knowledge of audio consoles and systems, and/or theatrical lighting boards and systems; 
    •    Strong interpersonal skills, including strong oral, written, and listening communication capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of the role college unions serve on a university campus; Knowledge of emergency management protocols; Skill at managing multiple projects and deadlines; Ability to use gathered data to strategically recommend long term plans.

Salary: The salary for this position is commensurate with experience and other qualifications and is accompanied by a standard university benefits package.
