Primary Purpose of Department:

The Department of Art & Art History inspires students to expand their vision of the world and themselves through study and practice in Art and Art History. The department aims to foster innovative and thoughtful art practices, scholarship, and arts-based education and believes that art is vital to our students, our university, our communities, and our future. The Department currently offers a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Art, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Art History, a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Art with nine concentrations. Additionally, a B.F.A. degree with a concentration in Art Education, a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Graphic Design and a minor in Art History are offered. An Honors Program in Art History is offered and the department participates in the College Honors Program. Additionally, the department plays an important role in the delivery of required coursework within the University General Education program.

Description of Work:

Teaching – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, and grading student work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Art and Art History is seeking applicants for a full time Lecturer and Technician in Ceramics. The typical work load assignment for this lecturer position is a 2/2 course load which includes Ceramics Wheel 1 and 2, Handbuilding and 3D Foundations. This position may, at times, be assigned to teach advanced Ceramics and beginning level Sculpture courses. The candidate is expected to have an understanding of interdisciplinary trends in contemporary ceramics. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the person in this position will manage a comprehensive ceramics studio including budget and purchasing, equipment & kiln firing/maintenance/safety and coordination of work-study students.

Minimum Experience/Education:

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned masters and/or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience:

MFA is preferred. Experience in digital fabrication, kiln building, mold making and ceramic design are valued. While Lecturers are not evaluated on research practice, a record of studio accomplishment and active research agenda is highly valued.
