Date Posted:10-Feb-2021 Close All Job SummaryCIRES and the NOAA Chemical Sciences Laboratory (CSL) are looking for a Research Scientist to develop and advance emission processing systems of air pollutants and greenhouse gases.
The aim of this research is to improve the understanding of the emissions of air pollutants and greenhouse gases and the processes that control the regional distributions of ozone and aerosols and their radiative impacts. The work will be closely coordinated with extensive measurement and modeling programs at CSL in evaluating emission inventories with atmospheric observations and with other NOAA labs in implementing near real-time emission updates for air quality forecasting applications. The results of measurement programs and modeling studies will be used interactively to identify and solve outstanding questions in air quality and climate.

- Developing and maintaining the emissions processing system utilized in NOAA research and forecast models, including the Weather Research Forecast with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) and Finite-Volume Cubed-Sphere Dynamical Core (FV3) models.
- Actively support multi-institutional field experiments by processing model-ready gridded emission inventories of anthropogenic and biogenic emissions of air pollutants as well as greenhouse gases.
- Work closely with scientists from various experimental groups at CIRES and ESRL/CSL in the analysis of emission inventories during recent field missions such as LISTOS, COVID-AQS, and AEROMMA (planned), as well as with NOAA/NASA/ESA polar-orbiting and geostationary satellites.
- If you are the selected finalist you will be required to pass a federal laboratory background clearance for site access.
- This position will be rostered in CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder but will be physically situated in the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305.

- The annual hiring salary range for this Research Associate/Research Scientist I position is $60,000- $78,000.
- Relocation expenses are available for this position following CIRES and the University of Colorado’s relocation processes and procedures.
- Ph.D. in environmental or mechanical engineering, atmospheric sciences or computer science.
- The ability to produce quality emission inventories, and communicate and interpret the results, with a minimum of guidance.
- Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, FORTRAN, etc.), or prior experience with emission processing systems for regional and global earth system models is desired.
