Job Summary:
The Department of Occupational Therapy at Eastern Washington University (Spokane campus) invites applications for qualified occupational therapists seeking a full-time, 9-month tenure-track faculty position. We are looking for individuals with experience working in geriatrics, mental health settings, or health and wellness.

This tenure-track position is for an assistant professor. The successful applicant will have clinical expertise in one of the areas listed above and be expected to teach in one or more of these areas as well as several first year courses. The applicant will be expected to engage in scholarly activities, supervise MOT research or capstone projects, and engage in professional, university and departmental service.

The department is housed in the College of Health Science based on the EWU Spokane campus. The college and department prepare students to help meet the growing market demand in the critical fields of health care and education. The College of Health Science is home to several nationally accredited undergraduate and graduate programs with an increased focus on inter-professional education (IPE).

The Department of Occupational Therapy at Eastern Washington University is accredited by the Accreditation Council on Occupational Therapy Education. We are situated within the College of Health Sciences and Public Health (CHSPH) and operate in a new and well-equipped campus in the University District near downtown Spokane, Washington. The college includes six other health science programs: Physical Therapy, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Public Health, Dental Hygiene, Wellness and Movement Sciences, Health Sciences Administration and pre-Nursing. Our campus is inter-collegiate and includes medical, nursing, pharmacy, and dentistry programs. CHSPH has well established community partnerships and a commitment to serving rural and under-represented populations. The Department works with school districts, an agency offering services to children with autism, a drop-in center for homeless women, a veteran's maker space, a parasports program, a day program for adults with developmental disabilities, a variety of mental health and substance abuse treatment programs, as well as with local hospitals, clinics, and private practices. We look forward to developing additional opportunities for community-engaged scholarship.

Faculty are expected to engage in effective teaching and assessment of student learning. Additionally, the candidate selected for this position may be expected to teach face-to-face classes, hybrid or blended classes and/or online classes according to the needs of the department.

Required Qualifications:
  • Post-professional OTD, doctorate degree (DrOT), or doctorate degree (PhD, EdD) in a related field.
  • Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy (MOT or MSOT) if in process toward post-professional OTD (or other doctorate) will be considered; however, all requirements for the OTD or doctorate in a related field must be completed by August 2023.
  • Established record or evidence of strong potential of successful teaching of graduate students and clinical experience in at least one of the following areas:
    1. Pediatrics
    2. Assistive Technology
    3. Neurological Disorders
    4. Mental Health
  • Evidence of, or willingness to develop a research agenda related to the field of occupational therapy practice
  • Eligible for Washington state Occupational Therapy licensure
  • Desire and ability to promote and support cultural competence, universal accessibility, and/or diversity.
  • Evidence of ability to engage in productive, respectful, collegial relationships with students, faculty and staff


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Preferred PhD, EdD, or DrOT
  • Established record, or evidence of potential, of external research funding
  • Desire and ability to promote and support cultural competence
  • Readiness to work closely with students and faculty colleagues in community engagement and service-learning initiatives

A Faculty Activity Plan will be developed by the end of the first quarter of the selected candidate’s appointment, and will consist of a combination of teaching, research, service and/or release time to perform administrative duties, as negotiated and as needed to meet the business needs of the department.

All faculty are expected to engage in effective teaching and in assessment of student learning outcomes.

Conditions of Employment:
This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university fund or other items of value, as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. Employment will be contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.

Note: Interviews will be conducted via Zoom (camera must be enabled). While we anticipate being open for in-person instruction for academic year 2021-22, should Washington State or university pandemic restrictions disallow for in-person instruction, then courses will be taught via online platforms, including Zoom and other technologies. Candidates must be able to demonstrate competence using these technologies.

Salary Information: Minimum salary is $73,873; hiring salary will be dependent on experience and qualifications.
