The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (Penn Museum) and the School of Arts and Sciences are seeking a Teaching Specialist in archaeometallurgy for the Center for the Analysis of Archaeological Materials (CAAM; http://penn.museum/caam). CAAM is a joint endeavor of the Penn Museum and Penn's School of Arts and Sciences and conducts teaching and mentoring of students in archaeological science at both undergraduate and graduate levels. CAAM combines archaeobotany, archaeometallurgy, archaeozoology, ceramics, conservation, digital archaeology, human skeletal analysis and lithics in a highly collaborative interdisciplinary program which ranges from introductory courses to independent student research.

The appointment is at the rank of Full-Time Lecturer in the School of Arts and Sciences, and will be made in one of the CAAM stakeholder departments according to the appointee's area of expertise. The appointment will be for an initial year with the possibility of annual renewal for an additional two years, contingent upon a satisfactory performance review and approval of the Dean. Teaching Specialists report to the CAAM Director with oversight from the CAAM Faculty Steering Committee. The Teaching Specialist will teach or co-teach one course per semester; train and supervise students in their respective technical area; support Penn Museum archaeological projects; publish and/or assist in publication of relevant research; and monitor and maintain their respective lab equipment.

Qualifications

Minimum: MA/MS, with a PhD highly preferred, in archaeology or a related field plus 3-5 years of archaeological laboratory work or equivalent combination of education and experience; broad knowledge of archaeological material culture and a record of involvement in the analysis and sourcing of archaeological metal artifacts; teaching and mentoring experience. Practical experience in sample preparation and operation of instrumentation, as well as knowledge of a wide variety of technical methodologies for the analysis, teaching and publication of archaeometallurgical data are required, including isotopic analysis, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray fluorescence, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, metallography and other techniques. Organizational skills and attention to detail, multi-tasking and collaborative abilities. Ability to travel may be required.
