Job Description:

Interact with faculty to coordinate and organize turf, ornamental and greenhouse research projects which involves allotting space, determining appropriate pre-plant treatments, specialized nutritional requirements/turf varieties, and any other specific details needed to accomplish the research project.

Supervise and plan work schedules for establishment, maintenance, and harvest of all research projects at the unit. Supervise maintenance of irrigation and necessary equipment for all projects. Supervision includes issuing tasks to employees and assuring correct completion within project guidelines.

Keep informed of other on-going research at the Plant Science Research and Education Unit in order to assist other research coordinators with turf, agronomic, vegetable, fruit, and ornamental crop research projects under their control. This information is vital to the overall success of the Unit. Employee must utilize wide latitude of independent judgment regarding timing, location, method of application and proper procedures for research activities in various locations. Employee maintains close liaison with faculty members and technical support with respect to rules and regulations governing pesticide use and application.

Incumbent assists in planning for new programs and enhancement of existing programs and production practices. Incumbent conducts seminars in the proper use of pesticides and related safety training. Incumbent will experience frequent personal, telephone and written contacts. Internal contacts relate to teaching and research programs, purchasing, maintenance, and personnel relations. External contacts are with area business people, cooperative extension service, and local producers of turf grass, ornamental, greenhouse and agricultural products.

Incumbent will coordinate and schedule weekend/holiday greenhouse monitoring staff. This will include training those staff members on how to identify plant stress from insects and disease as well as water overage or shortage. These staff members will also be expected to perform weekend/holiday entire farm security checks checking fence lines and all water lines for any possible leaks. This incumbent will be the point of contact for any issues that may arise with security or greenhouses on weekends or holidays. Incumbent will also maintain the calendar and schedule staff for overnight coverage for freeze events at PSREU. Incumbent will oversee after hours emergency activities including freeze protection, power outages, greenhouse, seed storage, dryer, irrigation, and security issues. Incumbent will ensure faculty are in compliance with UF, State and Federal regulations.

Order supplies and schedule deliveries. Incumbent is responsible for operating within the annual budget developed by the director. Supervises preparation of facility for field days and special events, conducts tours for dignitaries and other visitors. Employee will help maintain turf grass building, greenhouses, head house, and turf and ornamentals at conference center, office, and gator wall for research, teaching and extension purposes. Helps in catastrophic events around the state with emergency response for IFAS.

Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Job requires, standing, kneeling, bending, climbing, stooping, and walking.

Unit operates on a four 10-hour day work schedule, utilizing Research Coordinators and Farm Manager to rotate coverage for Friday crew. Often requires out of town travel to alternate locations. Periodic overtime when required to meet emergencies and flexible hours with potential overnight stays. Employee may be called in for freeze protection or weekend/holiday greenhouse checks.

Expected Salary:

$55,000.00 annually

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Valid Florida Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization; or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience.
