Florida Atlantic University is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow, Jupiter, FL.

The Kowalko lab is recruiting a postdoc to examine the genetic and neural mechanisms, as well as the ecological factors, that underlie the evolution of behavior in the blind Mexican cavefish, Astyanax mexicanus. The lab uses a broad array of approaches, including genetic mapping and gene editing. The project will take place primarily in the laboratory, with the option for fieldwork depending on the candidate’s interest.

Applicants with experience in behavioral analysis, functional genetics or genetic mapping are encouraged to apply. Start-date is as soon as possible. The initial contract is for one year with renewal for additional years pending performance and funding.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct phenotyping and genotyping analyses of fish for a large-scale QTL experiment.
  • Perform basic molecular lab work for functional genetic experiments.
  • Participate in projects that may or may not be directly related research, but aid in other’s projects in the lab and help generate preliminary data for grant submissions. This may also include mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Write and submit manuscripts. Help in the preparation of other lab-wide manuscripts and analyses for those manuscripts.
  • Aid in fish husbandry and lab maintenance
  • Attend lab meetings, relevant lectures, and training sessions. Assist other lab/community members.

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD from an accredited institution in genomics, evolution, genetics, or related fields required at time of application.

Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality publications.

Interest in behavioral evolution.

A desire to work collaboratively.

Excellent communication skills.
