The School of Data Science (SDS) Public Health Sciences within the School of Medicine, and the School of Education & Human Development at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applicants for an Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor tenured or tenure-track faculty position under a “Race and Inequality” cluster hire. This position will focus on quantification of health disparities and inequality and modes of action to address those disparities and inequalities. The position, as part of a broader set of hires, is expected to commence in August 2021.

Over the past two decades, advances in technology and communication, such as, social media, the Internet of Things, environmental and physiological sensors, and more, have enabled a transformation in ways in which we study, interpret, and take action on health disparities and inequalities. The successful candidate will undertake research, teaching and community and corporate partnerships to harness such data to further equitable access to resources, information, and opportunities to improve the quality of life. A particular emphasis will be on studies that improve the lives of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia which is racially, economically and geographically diverse – from the urban areas of northern Virginia to Appalachia.

In collaboration with other faculty forming the cluster there will be the opportunity to work with those exploring the many different perspectives on the problems and the solutions to include exercise scientists examining how access to and performance of regular physical activity impact health disparities, biomedical researchers who are part of our iTHRIV clinical translation initiative exploring COVID data and multiple other collaborations within the School of Data Science and beyond.

The UVA School of Data Science – UVA’s 12th school and the first established since 2007 – will position the University as a global leader in efforts to improve society through teaching and research based on the powerful, emerging field of data science. It builds on a foundation set in place at UVA by the Data Science Institute (DSI), a pan-University institute established in 2013 that grants graduate degrees and has a dual mission in education and research. The School of Data Science is developing new undergraduate, doctoral, and certificate programs, helping to meet soaring demand for qualified data science professionals in a field that plays a key role in the global information-based economy. As a School without Walls, interdisciplinary collaboration is a hallmark of the School.

The UVA School of Education and Human Development aims to spur transformative change in education, health, and human services through rigorous practice-informed scholarship and professional preparation. The School offers several undergraduate and graduate degrees across a range of disciplines and is a hub of multidisciplinary applied research. Several relevant areas of expertise include educational and health disparities research; positive youth development; training of researchers and practitioners; research, statistics, and evaluation; and policies relevant to children, youth, families, and schools. Several faculty in the School are actively engaged in sponsored research and training related to health disparities, which cuts across a number of areas, including human development, psychology, policy, and kinesiology. Of particular relevance to this search is the School’s nationally-ranked Kinesiology Department, which seeks to advance the discovery and application of knowledge that relates human movement and physical activity to health and well-being.

The Department of Public Health Sciences in the School of Medicine leads innovative research, education, and community engagement strategies to advance population health, clinical care, and patient outcomes. PHS faculty foster multi-faceted research and educational collaborations with clinicians, researchers, other professionals, and communities to improve health equity and overall health and well-being. PHS faculty also work closely with public health officials and community partners at the local, state, and national levels to address the social determinants of health, focusing on such topics as cancer prevention, diabetes, pandemic-related research, rural health disparities, mental health, and addiction. The Department is a hub for the generation, analysis, interpretation, and management of clinical outcome and population health data in the School of Medicine.

Candidates must have earned or be on track to earn a PhD in Biomedicine, Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, or a closely related field by the start date of the position. Candidates must have a record of excellence in research, as appropriate for the candidate’s rank, in applications of data science to a health-related domain, preferably as it related to health disparities. A demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence is required. Evidence of an explicit commitment and activities promoting diversity and advancing understanding and outcomes for underrepresented groups is essential. Appointment with tenure requires documented excellence in research and teaching and a proven national reputation. Faculty rank will be dependent on academic qualifications and years of experience.

Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
