THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF IRAQ, SULAIMANI

AUIS is located in the UNESCO-designated City of Literature Sulaimani, the secure cultural capital of the Kurdish region in Iraq. Founded in 2007 for the public benefit of all Iraq, AUIS is an independent, nonprofit, coeducational, English-speaking liberal arts university. In 2011, AUIS moved to its new 400-acre marble-and-glass campus overlooking historic Sulaimani, a thriving economic center of more than a million residents.

The campus has 50 classrooms, high-tech computer labs, an expansive library, auditoriums, dining facilities, and sports facilities. Our 1,300 students are taught in English by faculty members from approximately 20 different countries; more than 40% of the full-time faculty are from the United States and 30% are from Iraq. The University’s acclaimed preparatory program is the only such program in Iraq to have earned U.S. accreditation (CEA). AUIS graduates are highly sought after by regional and international employers and have continued their studies at leading universities in the United States and Europe.

Recently, AUIS introduced a unique dual-degree program with the University of Arizona, ranked #48 nationally and #89 globally by the Center for World University Rankings. For the first time, students from Iraq and the Kurdistan Region are able to receive U.S.-accredited undergraduate engineering degrees while living close to home. Additional majors are in development. Under the agreement, selected faculty are eligible for designation as Global Instructors.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

AUIS invites applications for the position of General Counsel and Professor of Law, with open faculty rank including Professor of Practice. AUIS is looking for a motivated, collegial, student-focused, and culturally sensitive colleague who is both an accomplished legal practitioner and an inspiring teacher, with exemplary skills in the English and Arabic languages and familiar with legal systems in the U.S. and Middle East. This is an extraordinary opportunity to oversee legal policies and practices at a successful university, and to teach in an innovative law program that provides a challenging and rewarding educational experience for undergraduate law students who, in the Kurdish and Iraqi system, can practice law upon graduation. We seek an individual who is fascinated by the opportunity to make a difference in a demanding but exciting environment.

The Program:

The AUIS law major offers undergraduate courses leading to Bachelor of Arts degree in Law. Structured in collaboration with Stanford University School of Law, the AUIS law program has already achieved notable distinction: for each of the last three years, AUIS students qualified to represent the country of Iraq in the Jessup Moot Court Competition. The curriculum is supported by state-of-the-art classrooms, labs, and facilities, by experienced and student-focused faculty, and by strong links with the community.

The ideal candidate exhibits the following characteristics:

  • An earned J.D. degree or other graduate degree in Law from a U.S. university, preferably with state bar membership.
  • A distinguished record in legal practice, teaching, scholarship, and administration.
  • Experience with the practice of law in Iraq or other country in the Middle East.
  • Outstanding English written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking. Arabic language skills are highly desirable.
  • A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders in a multicultural environment.

Compensation:

The compensation package is competitive and includes base salary, subsidized housing, annual airfare, subsidized health insurance, a generous holiday and leave policy, opportunities for consulting, and other elements.

Applicants should submit the following documents via email, with “General Counsel” in the subject line, to recruitment@auis.edu.krd:

  • Cover letter
  • Curriculum vitae

Shortlisted applicants will be asked to provide contact information for three references.

No telephone calls please. While we thank all applicants for their interest, only those under consideration will be contacted for an interview. AUIS is an Affirmative Action / Equal Employment Opportunity employer and believes that diversity is essential to education.

Organization

The American University of Iraq, Sulaimani is a non-profit institution for public benefit founded in 2007 to provide a student-centered American-style education that embodies the philosophy, standards, and teaching practices of the American higher education model.

AUIS admits all qualified students regardless of social, ethnic, or religious background. Students are admitted based on a record of past academic performance and potential for success, including capacity to engage in self-directed learning and demonstrated high levels of critical thinking.

At AUIS, young Iraqis do more than co-exist – they learn lasting values of respect for the individual and a spirit of free inquiry, and they thrive in a culture of achievement and accountability. Today nearly 1,100 students from all parts of Iraq study at AUIS.

The university currently offers six academic programs that lead to a bachelor’s degree, as well as an Executive Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) and continuing education classes from its Professional Development Institute.

Undergraduate degree programs include Business Administration, General Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Information Technology, International Studies, and English. The Executive MBA in International Management and Leadership is offered in conjunction with Steinbeis Hochschule in Berlin. Graduates of this program receive a dual Executive MBA from AUIS and Steinbeis Hochschule.

The Professional Development Institute at AUIS provides professionals, companies, and organizations with access to professional education programs, including English language studies and project management.

Rounding out the university experience is a robust campus life, with several university sports teams and more than a dozen student-sponsored clubs and other activities. AUIS offers competitive men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, ping pong, and soccer, and a dozen other student activities, including an internationally competitive debate society, drama, business, hiking, photography, running, and radio clubs. Students have also participated in conferences and competitions outside of Iraq, including an international Model United Nations conference, Hult Global Case Challenge, and various Fulbright scholarships. Further, AUIS is home to the nation’s first and only independent student newspaper, the AUIS Voice, and houses student chapters of the U.S.-based Society of Professional Journalists and the Association for Computing Machinery.

In the fall of 2011, AUIS marked the beginning of its fourth academic year with a move to its new 169-hectare (418-acre) campus. The university grounds include an administrative building, gender-specific dormitories, and an academic building, which houses lecture halls and classrooms, conference rooms, and faculty offices. AUIS also has a cafeteria, two outdoor basketball courts and an outdoor soccer field. State-of-the-art science labs will be completed next year.
