Position Highlights:

We are seeking a highly experienced Associate Director for Administration (ADA) to join the University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC). The UACC is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Cancer Center headquartered in the State of Arizona. Reporting directly to the University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) Director, the Associate Director for Administration (ADA) is a key member of the leadership team which is responsible for the establishment and execution of programmatic research priorities that enables the Cancer Center to fulfill its mission and vision. The ADA is the principal administrative officer of Cancer Center’s research enterprise and will provide administrative oversight and drive future strategy for enhancing and expanding cancer research across all Colleges/Schools within the University of Arizona.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The ADA is integrally involved in the development, implementation, and programmatic evaluation of the Center’s research efforts, which are essential to maintaining and renewing the Center’s National Cancer Institute designation every five years. As part of these efforts, this high-level executive position will also be responsible for aligning efforts with campus-wide marketing, communications, and development offices to support both clinical and research dimensions of the Center. As appropriate, he/she will serve as a representative of the Center on various institutional leadership committees and boards. This position also has administrative accountability for the Center’s assigned space, investments, budget, and information systems associated with the Center’s research operations.

EssentialDuties and Responsibilities
The ADA overseesmultiple areas within the UACC administrative unit and is ultimatelyaccountable for ensuring excellence and compliance in areas of fiscalmanagement, human resources, grants/contracts management, publicrelations/communications, philanthropy, information technology, and facilitymanagement.

General Administration

  • Assists the Director with all research operations including the creation and implementation of Center-wide policies, processes, and initiatives; works closely with the Director to resolve any issues as they pertain to the Center.
  • Provides input and executes the mission-driven, strategic planning and evaluation efforts for the Center with priority being placed on maintaining NCI designation and comprehensive cancer center status.
  • Assist the Director in activities related to the leadership, planning, and evaluation efforts, including but not limited to the Center’s Executive Committee, External Advisory Board, Community Advisory Board, and the philanthropic Advisory Board.
  • Assists the Director with the preparation and administration of budgets as necessary to ensure the financial viability of the Center’s research operations. In addition, oversees and supervises the fiscal management of the Center.
  • Assists the Center Director with faculty and staff recruitment as directed; coordinates the arrival of new faculty and staff with UAHS and the Cancer Center.
  • Works to ensure collaboration with all University Colleges as well as with University Hospital and clinical operations.
  • Participates in the ongoing support and implementation of advanced technology to support comprehensive information
  • systems for the Cancer Center. These systems are used to support both research and clinical research of the Center.
  • Based on best practice and UACC needs, creates and implements new programs, initiatives, and policies for the Cancer Center.
  • Supports the planning and support of the fundraising efforts, community outreach, government relations, and public relations.

Cancer Center SupportGrant (CCSG) Administration:
The ADA serves as theexecutive administrator responsible for the oversight and management of theCenter’s Cancer Center Support Grant. These efforts include, but are notlimited to:

  • Monitors, evaluates, and reports on all P30 CCSG outcomes, progress, and organizational changes within the Center; Ensures appropriate and timely communication with the NCI.
  • Tracks and evaluates all CCSG-related data and associated Center metrics; ADA is accountable for the quality of the CCSG application, including accuracy, consistency, and integrity.
  • Ensures service-oriented support for Senior Leaders and members to advance the Center’s scientific mission.
  • Provides administrative oversight of Center-wide initiatives and programmatic activities (i.e., Research Retreats, Seminars, Program meetings); manages the Center’s membership Program and fosters effective member communication and engagement.
  • Oversees processes for solicitation, review, award, and monitoring of pilot projects.
    Provides administrative oversight of CCSG-supported Shared Resources, Education and Training activities, and Community Outreach and Engagement activities.

Fiscal Management:

  • Oversee all financial resources of the UACC and is ultimately responsible for fiscal results. This position supervises a financial team that prepares and administers the Cancer Center’s budget from all sources, including regular reporting, analytics, and assessment of risk.
  • Budgets, tracks, and reports revenue and expenses associated with academic, research, development, and service center/core facility endeavors.
  • Identifies budget variances and initiates corrective action in a timely manner.
  • Gathers information and input for the preparation and management of operating and capital budgets.
  • Coordinates, manages, and approves procurement.

Grants/Contracts Management:

  • Provides expertise and assistance in developing successful large-scale grant submissions that are critical to the mission of the Center (P01s, SPORES, T32, U54, etc.).
  • Directly monitors and maintains compliance for pre- and post-award of grants, contracts, and outgoing subcontracts under the direct responsibility of the UACC.

Human Resources:

  • Oversees all human resources activity for the Center. The UACC administrative unit is responsible for recruiting, hiring, termination, classification, training, salary administration, time coordination, effort reporting, payroll, evaluation, visa processing, and employee relation activity for all personnel associated directly with the UACC.

Public Relations and Communications:

  • Oversees the development of internal and external communications to develop positive and informative messaging for the UACC. These communications include traditional news media, social media, UACC website, and the development of written and digital collateral to promote the Center’s efforts.

Philanthropy/Development:

  • Supports the development team by working with the Development Director and UACC Director as needed to develop new proposals and presentations to solicit interests/funding for strategic efforts within the Center.
  • Helps ensures that philanthropy funds are utilized in the intent they were given.

Facilities Management:

  • Oversees the management of space planning, allocation, building operations, core facilities, information technology, and capital asset management.

The University of Arizona Cancer Center is theonly NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center headquartered in the Stateof Arizona. The Cancer Center has three research Programs, namely, CancerBiology, Clinical and Translational Oncology, and Cancer Prevention and Controlwith strengths in basic mechanisms of carcinogenesis, tumor microenvironment,disparities, and cancer prevention. The Cancer Center is further supported by abroad array of Shared Resources in support of our cancer research activitiesincluding but not limited to Human Immune Monitoring, Cancer Imaging,Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Metabolomics, Behavioral Measurements andInterventions as well as our comprehensive biorepository which providesbiospecimen collection, processing, and storage coupled with clinical and riskfactor data collection for a variety of cancers. Bidirectionalcommunication with our catchment is promoted by our Community Outreach and EngagementTeam.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree. Master's preferred.
  • A minimum of eleven years of directly relatedexperience, including 7 years of managerial experience. The ideal candidate will haveoncology-related research experience and/or experience with the P30 CancerCenter Support Grant.
  • Requires experience in leading multiple teams, projects, programs, and/or functions.

*Preferred: MBA/MPH/MHA or PhD. *A builder, a visionary, a leader, and a focused and goal-oriented manager. *Above all, a dedicated team player .*Effectively meets deadlines.*Ability to work effectively within a matrix organization as well as develop productive inter-institutional and inter-agency relationships locally, regionally, and nationally.*Demonstrates strong skills in organization, planning and evaluation, oral and written communications, and must have a strong financial acumen.*Experience developing individual, institutional, and large-scale multi-project cancer research proposals (NIH and other peer-reviewed agencies or equivalent).*Demonstrates ability to lead groups from diverse professional areas and operates comfortably at a variety of organizational levels to achieve results.*Acts proficiently in unstructured situations; working well with little direction, though able to accept direction as necessary. Is solution-oriented. *Demonstrates skills in conflict management and possesses excellent interpersonal skills.
