The Active Living Specialist will advance Active Transportation and Shared-Use initiatives in Pinal County to improve walk-ability and bike-ability and increase access to recreation, healthful foods, and community resources. Work will focus on SNAP-eligible communities but will support efforts throughout the county. The Active Living Specialist will develop and implement programs in collaboration with local school systems, municipalities, faith-based organizations, communities, and neighborhood organizations.

- Build and maintain collaborations with school, community, and governmental agencies to advocate and support active living and build environmental policy, systems, and environment (PSE) changes that improve bicyclist and pedestrian safety utilizing "Smart Growth" initiatives.
- Build relationships with local government transportation and planning agencies to attend advisory committee groups, community meetings, and health impact assessment briefings in two communities.
- Attend meetings to advocate for the development of municipal policies that provide physical activity (PA) opportunities.
- Advocate for the creation of new and the expansion of existing walking/biking/transit networks.
- Collaborate with the Pinal County Parks and Recreation Centers and other community partners to identify and assess local PA resources.
- Identify locations for increased PA opportunities (parks, trails, health and wellness centers, community gardens, etc.) in partnership with Pinal County Parks and Recreation Centers, the Ak- Chin Indian community, and other community partners.
- Provide Technical Assistance (e.g., low/no-cost ideas for improvements such as painting outdoor basketball courts, organizing public park clean-up days. Assisting Parks and Recreation or other departments in finding alternative funding sources to assist with repairs or in procuring new equipment) to community partners to improve the usability of local area PA resources by prioritizing needed improvements from pre-collected assessments (e.g., the Physical Activity Resource Assessment, health impact assessments, etc.).
- Collaborate with community partners to publicize local PA resources via fliers and lists distributed at events, partners, and sites.
- Collaborate with the Parks and Recreation Centers and other community partners to partner on recurring PA events, such as 5K runs Tiny Tot Olympics, bicycling events, Fun Runs, and Family Play Day events.
- Collaborate with local 4-H leadership to establish, educate, and support program objectives regarding Policy, Systems, and Environmental changes in Pinal County.
- Promote these PA events through advertisements, fliers, posters, and bulletin boards at community sites.
- Provide Technical Assistance to site leaders in developing presentations on the importance of PA.
- Offer guidance on tracking enrollments of Community Support Groups such as walking clubs and provide ideas and support for a kickoff event. Offer continued support to Community Support Groups and help site directors and participants set goals, train and track their activity, and offer ideas and support to celebrate successes or goal accomplishments.
- Provide outreach, including Direct Education, to participants on the creation of Community Support Groups.
- Supervise Instructional Specialists and/or AmeriCorps Volunteers
Direct Education to account for 10% (4 hours) per week.
- Provide DE, utilizing evidence-based curricula at community sites, prioritizing sites nearby to local PA resources.
- Provide educational events, materials (e.g., the AZ Health Zone Fun Food News), recipes, and the USDA 10 Tips, at DE and community-wide PA events.

- The role of active transportation on community health, including the roles of Shared-Use, complete streets, trails, smart growth, public open space, playgrounds, multi-generational public spaces, and Smart Growth. Influences that community design and the built environment have on physical activity and healthy food access on a population level.
- Health in All Policies, and sociological and economic characteristics of a community and their influence on a community's health (social determinants of health).
- Evidence-based public health approaches related to healthy community design, including pedestrian and bicyclist safety.
- Principles and practices of health education and advocacy.
- Relationships between health disparities and the social determinants of health.
- Schools and school district operations related to facility spaces.
- Community asset mapping.
- Bilingual Skills (English/Spanish).
- Program planning, development, and implementation.

- Develop materials and deliver presentations to community partners.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing in a manner appropriate to the needs of the audience.
- Build collaborations, partnerships, and relationships with external community groups to foster healthy community design strategies.
- Maintain program documentation and produce and submit timely, useful quality reports.
- Conduct and coordinate meetings.
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
- ABachelor's degree in Education, Health Education, Public or Community Health,Sustainability, Urban Planning, Community Organizing, or related field.
- Up to 1 year of experience coordinating and administering programs in health,safety, or active living, including working in lower-income communities.
- Specializedtraining, certifications, and other special requirements:
- Mustpossess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license by thetime of hire and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
- Must complete a fingerprint and background screening.
- Master's degree in public or Community Health, Sustainability, Urban Planning, Community Organizing, or related field.
- Experience implementing or advocating for active living initiatives such as Shared-Use, Safe Routes to School, Complete Streets, Vision Zero, Active School Neighborhood Checklists, etc.
- Experience conducting community asset mapping.
- Experience with walkability assessments.
- Experience with park assessments. Experience with community organizing and engagement activities.
- American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) Certification.
- Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) credential.
