Position Title:

Dean, College of Osteopathic Medicine

Job Description:

Marian University has an outstanding opportunity for a qualified professional to serve as the Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM).

History

Opening in 2013, Marian University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (MU-COM) became Indiana’s first medical school in 110 years. The mission and vision of MU-COM is to be a Catholic medical institution built on the inspired vision and values of Marian’s Franciscan heritage, and dedicated to preparing osteopathic physicians who are committed to the complete healing of individuals’ bodies, minds, and spirits. Marian’s MU-COM is committed to serving the people of Indiana and to developing osteopathic physicians through research, service, and teaching.

For the past six years, MU-COM has achieved tremendous growth, progress, and success. Among those accomplishments are full accreditation from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA), three MU-COM graduating classes and commencement ceremonies, and an increase in the application pool at a pace that is among the leaders nationally for colleges of osteopathic medicine. Since opening the medical school, Marian’s goal has been to help fill the shortage of primary care physicians in Indiana, particularly in rural areas of the state. Of the more than 400 doctors who have graduated from MU-COM, approximately one-third are completing residencies in Indiana and more than sixty percent are in a primary care specialty.

Location

The Michael A. Evans Center for Health Sciences is home to MU-COM and the Alan and Sue Leighton School of Nursing, providing medical and nursing students opportunities for interprofessional education in a state-of-the-art facility. Located on the Marian University campus, with close proximity to all of Marian’s academic colleges and schools, students have access to all the amenities of an exciting campus, and the countless professional and personal opportunities of a vibrant city.

Responsibilities and Opportunities

Marian University now seeks its next Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine to build upon previous successes and to chart a course for an exciting future. The Dean of MU-COM shall direct and oversee all aspects of medical education, ensuring that the program of study fulfills the mission, goals, and strategic plan of Marian University. The Dean will actively promote the advancement of scientific knowledge and scholarship among the COM faculty. The Dean will be strongly focused on clinical residencies, ensuring that MU-COM has the appropriate number both currently and for the future. The Dean will work closely with the University leadership team to ensure that MU-COM has the appropriate level of funding and will participate in fundraising activities as needed. The Dean shall be responsible for planning, budgeting, coordinating, supervising and evaluating personnel and programs within the COM and for compliance with the standards of the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) and the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

The Dean will have primary responsibility for carrying out the 2019-2025 strategic plan for MU-COM, with its goals to provide:

  • A quality professional education program emphasizing osteopathic training in primary care through lifelong learning and scholarly activity in a caring, academic community. This community will include students from Indiana as well as those from the surrounding states, the nation, and the world.
  • An education that “profoundly transforms lives, society, and the world” consistent with the Catholic university’s four core Franciscan sponsorship values (dignity of the individual, peace and justice, reconciliation, and responsible stewardship) and the tenets of osteopathic medicine.
  • A curriculum that promotes and measures student competencies with an emphasis on osteopathic clinical skills and public service activities provided in diverse populations of individuals and cultures, including the underprivileged and medically under-served in local, regional, national, and international environments.
  • A commitment to actively support and encourage hospitals in Indiana and surrounding states in the expansion of graduate medical education either by increasing positions in existing residency and fellowship programs or by creating new programs.
  • Required Qualifications:
