General Purpose

The Analyst Programmer II will split their time between supporting an image de-identification process and other clinical research data projects. This job will provide technical and operational support for image de-identification. Working with experts in the areas of Radiology and Computer Science to assist with the de-identification or verification of de-identification of medical image data. Collaborating with internal Compliance, Privacy, and Security Offices to get approval for tools and processes to accomplish de-identification. The Analyst Programmer will also work on other clinical research projects that could include creating data collection tools, cleaning data, and other data management activities. This role will collaborate with study teams and project leaders across Duke.

Supervisor

This position reports to the Director, Clinical Research Operations - Data.

Essential Duties

    Serve as an honest broker for medical images. This role is a neutral third party to de-identify or anonymize data on behalf of investigative teams. Working with statisticians and study teams, provide data management, de-identification, and validation services. This will include learning the regulatory requirements for various types of data sharing requests (e.g., limited dataset, de-identified dataset, or anonymized dataset) as well as the methodology to work with DICOM and non-DICOM medical images.

Contribute to the development of internal SOPs and external policies. Work with experts to determine ongoing needs around image de-identification and data sharing, and serve to get approval for new tools and processes to meet these needs. Provide regular status reports to leadership and stakeholders across Duke. Serve as a subject matter expert for image de-identification.

Serve as a data manager for projects seeking assistance with cleaning, merging, reshaping, and coding datasets. Use common data management tools such as SAS, R, Python, or SPSS to work with the study data to facilitate data importing or analysis. Also, assist study teams with reporting or visualizations, as needed, to help monitor and report on their data. This may require the use of tools like Tableau or R to create dashboards or other visualizations. Serve as a subject matter expert on good data practices in clinical research.

  • Work with other members of the data team to improve workflow and processes (e.g., implement standardizations). Develop policies and procedures around REDCap use, in collaboration with team leadership. Develop policies and procedures around the use of other data tools and systems (e.g., visualization software, SAS or other analytical tools), and minimum documentation requirements for data management projects.
  • Design, develop, and maintain databases (REDCap) for multiple studies. Assist and advise study teams regarding data collection best practices. Confer with principal investigator to develop forms or questionnaires for collection of study data. Test and debug projects to verify their accuracy and completeness. Import, export, and clean data for studies. Document all data processes to support best practices in data provenance and research GCPs.

  • Consult with study teams and other across the institution, providing one-on-one, and small group, instruction both in person and over email or telephone. Build subject matter expertise. Provide at the elbow support as needed. Participate in formal trainings, workshops, and presentations as requested. Serve as a mentor to co-workers doing data management. Provide training to co-workers and end-users analytical tools such as SAS, R, Python, or SPSS and data management.
  • Attend weekly Data Team meetings, monthly DOCR staff meetings, and other regular meetings around image de-identification and research projects as they are established.

  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
  • Education/Training Requirements

    Work requires a Bachelor's degree in mathematics or computer science or a computer-related field or equivalent coursework or technical training.

    Experience

    Work requires two years of application programming experience with some responsibility for systems design and supervision or project coordination. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

    Skills

    Familiarity with SQL, as well as statistical programming software such as R, SAS, or SPSS, and data visualization experience (Tableau, Power BI, R, other) strongly preferred. Prior experience with training development or delivery for data management is a plus.

    Education/Training: Work requires a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics or computer science or a computer-related field or equivalent coursework or technical training.

    Experience: Work requires two years of application programming experience with some responsibility for systems design and project coordination. Prefer experience in the areas of research or clinical data management and/or analysis, or prior experience with medical images and de-identification.

    Duke University was created in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, long had been interested in Trinity College.
