Position Summary

The Coordinator, in collaboration with and under the direction of, the Director of the Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Resource Center, assists in providing leadership and long-range planning for the APIDA Resource Center. The coordinator supports the operational needs of the center and assists with practices directed toward improving student outreach and yield, academic success, leadership and professional development, inclusion and retention, and enrichment of the overall student experience, particularly for APIDA students. This position builds capacity in the APIDA Resource Center by advising students, supporting purchases for the center, coordinating the event calendar, responding to inquiries to the space, and other tasks as needed. This position will/may be called upon as a resource in responding to sensitive equity, crisis, and individualized issues as they relate to APIDA students. This position will serve as a mentor and advisor to students, and a resource to other faculty/staff positions on campus. This position will work with interns and student assistants to design and deliver programs for graduate and/or undergraduate students, and for University employees with the goal of promoting leadership development, equity, multicultural education, social equality, etc. In addition, this position will help to address the intersectionality of identities such as gender, race, religion, ethnicity, class, and ability. This position will promote the APIDA Resource Center and raise awareness of APIDA excellence and equity gaps by supporting events/programs, creating content, representing the Center on campus, and other duties as needed.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits-eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before September 1, 2021.This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience

Experience:

Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Education:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior work experience in higher education
  • Prior work experience in office management
  • Knowledge of academic advising strategies, policies (i.e. General Education requirements), and tools (i.e. EAB).
  • Experience with ethnic studies, critical race theory, anti-racism, etc.
  • Competency in cross-cultural communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply power, privilege, and inequity concepts to create safe working environments for minoritized students, faculty, and staff.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advance notice.

Specialized Skills Required

  • Demonstrated successful performance in previous employment. (Must have previous job experience.)
  • Knowledge and experience working with APIDA students.
  • Documented experience developing and coordinating programs, trainings, workshops, and events.
  • Knowledge, sensitivity, and understanding of the social, political, personal, and cross-cultural needs of APIDA students.
  • Ability to collaborate and work with other units regarding issues of diversity and community, demonstrating skill in understanding and navigating a dynamic campus culture.
  • Ability to interact professionally, effectively, and collaboratively with various constituencies by demonstrating effective interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and excellent judgment in responding to sensitive and/or emotional issues and situations.
  • Ability to assess, design, implement, and evaluate effective programming and policies as related to this position.
  • Ability to work well independently and follow through on projects with minimal direction.
  • Ability to accept feedback and take directions well.
  • Ability to effectively administer and coordinate a variety of concurrent and ongoing activities, especially in regard to office and project management.
  • Demonstrated success working on teams and supporting colleagues on collaborative initiatives.
  • Ability to recruit, train, and support students for work in the Center and for advocacy work on campus.
  • Possession of commitment to punctuality, reliability, and attention to detail.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $4,304 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,304 - $6,120 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
