The Director reports directly to the Vice President of Inclusion & Institutional Equity and assists in providing vision and leadership for the Center for Student Diversity (CSD) and a wide range of related activities. This position will provide direct leadership and supervision for the CSD with emphasis on student development, counseling, advising, training, cultural programming, and related recruitment, retention, and student success initiatives for Towson University’s diverse student body. Advocacy for diversity, inclusion, and equity is a major aspect of the responsibility entrusted in the position. Additionally, developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with faculty and staff to provide ongoing education and support.

This position cultivates close working relationships with students, student organizations, the division of Student Affairs, the division of Academic Affairs faculty and staff, University Advancement and Alumni Relations, Marketing and Communications; as well as community partners to promote campus programs, build community and increase the cultural capacity of the campus. Provides administrative and strategic leadership of the CSD to respond to the changing needs of underrepresented and marginalized members of the campus. Serves as a resource to the university/community on policy development and initiatives relating to issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice, religious/spiritual life, LGBTQA and related themes. Provides supervision for all professional staff of the CSD to insure that programs and services support the campus-wide strategy. Develops and initiates professional development and evaluation of staff. Develops an assessment and budget plan for the center. Maintains records and links program objectives to annual budget. Develops long range strategic plan as related to the University Strategic plan to design and plan educational programs to enhance awareness and understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion for students, faculty and staff. Assesses programs, activities, trainings and educational components undertaken by the CSD. Provides adjustments to the plan utilizing data and evolving strategic plan and annual written reports utilizing collected data.

The Director also serves on institutional committees, teams, task force, partnerships (on and off campus) to develop and implement strategies for developing a more inclusive and equitable institution. Provides consultation to and collaboration with all divisions of the University to develop and implement strategic initiatives as proposed in Presidential Priorities and Diversity Strategic plans. Continues to develop recruitment and retention strategies to meet the needs of under-represented students. Assists VP with other duties and responsibilities as assigned.



Qualifications
Master’s degree and a minimum of five years of related professional experience required. The selected candidate must have:

  • Strong leadership abilities and excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrated public speaking ability
  • Knowledge of Diversity Equity & Inclusion
  • Team oriented and inclusive philosophy
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong understanding/expertise in working with issues faced by underrepresented students, faculty and staff.
  • An inclusive philosophy to support collaboration with all university students, faculty and staff.
  • Basic budget skills.
 

Preferred:

  • Experience working in higher education
  • Ability to develop, understand and utilize assessment and evaluation methods.
 A Criminal Background Investigation is required for the hired candidate and the results may impact employment.
