Description of Work:

Overview:
As a member of the Water and Integrated Cropping Systems (WICS) team, the incumbent develops and delivers extension programming focused on adoption and use of animal manure management practices that: a) improve profitability and sustainability; b) reduce environmental risk; c) encourage good stewardship; d) enhance resiliency; and e) expand consumer awareness of animal production systems. Based at an IANR facility within an animal feeding region of Nebraska, the incumbent delivers programming in that region and provides leadership to statewide WICS extension programming addressing animal manures.

Animal Manure Educator:
•Collaborates closely with colleagues, state and federal agencies, industry representatives, and crop producers delivering Land Application Training for Nebraska and precision manure use strategies targeting animal feeding operators, commercial manure applicators, and WICS team members;
•Develops, delivers, and measures impacts of programs and engagements enhancing manure use for agronomic and soil quality benefits and for minimizing common manure related challenges in Nebraska;
•Participates in collection and interpretation of data to develop management strategies for clientele to enhance adoption of technology for manure management, data driven agriculture, digital agriculture, and precision agriculture;
•Engages in collaborative-learning environments with crop and livestock producers and their advisors and encourages adoption of research-based information in decision-making – participates in and supports the Nebraska On-Farm Research Network;
•Participates in and contributes to professional development (e.g. Livestock and Poultry Environmental Learning Community and North Central Soil Health initiatives) to enhance and maintain professional expertise in cropping systems and extension pedagogy, and leverages knowledge gained to provide learning opportunities via professional development in-service activities for extension educators
•Uses entrepreneurial practices to secure grant funding, contracts, program fees, and partnerships/sponsorships to leverage the extension educational program resource base, and to expand the reach of the program; and
•Supports youth development programs by teaching in areas related to water and integrated cropping systems.

The incumbent accepts committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and/or university level.

Some travel is required. Must meet driver standards according to UNL policy and have a valid driver’s license. Criminal history background check will be conducted.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

•Master’s degree required and must be completed prior to the start date; one degree in Animal Science, Agronomy, Crop Science, Agricultural Mechanization, Agricultural/Biological Engineering, or closely related discipline, with emphasis on nutrient management strategies for crop production systems.
•Experience employing current digital management strategies and technologies for animal production.

Preferred Qualifications:

•Working knowledge of and experience with the use of precision agriculture strategies utilized in animal manure management.
•Experience teaching in a formal or informal setting.
•Ability to effectively communicate technical and non-technical information (e.g., publications, presentations, web, and social media).
•Experience working with individuals, coworkers, and teams to accomplish individual and/or group goals, as evidenced by academic, career, and/or community activities.
•Leadership skills as demonstrated by roles in academic, career, and/or community activities.
•Experience in the development and implementation of traditional and innovative program delivery methods (e.g., websites, blogs, Facebook, and Twitter, Pinterest, or other media platforms).
