Dean, School of Arts & Sciences

University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) invites applications and nominations for the position of dean in the School of Arts & Sciences. The dean reports directly to the provost and vice president for academic affairs and works collaboratively with the deans from the other schools, the library, and the vice presidents for student affairs and enrollment management to ensure UHV graduates are both liberally educated and professionally prepared.

The dean provides leadership in curriculum and academic program development and faculty hiring, tenure, and promotion. The dean promotes and supports faculty scholarship and research activities. The dean oversees the School's operating and capital budgeting process, recommends priorities to the provost and vice president for academic affairs, and oversees expenditures during the budget year. The dean will provide development and promotion of programs, institutes, and centers in the School of Arts & Sciences and maintain a close and collegial relationship with faculty and commitment to shared governance. The dean of the School of Arts & Sciences implements the School and University strategic plans, integrating benchmarking and assessment into ongoing planning and vision.

Required qualifications include an earned doctorate or other appropriate terminal degrees; a distinguished record of active scholarship, teaching, and/or creative accomplishments to qualify for appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure in a department within the School; and successful experience as a university administrator in a leadership role at the department chair level or above. It is preferred the selected candidate have a deep understanding of the broad range of arts & sciences; demonstrates commitment to promoting and building a diverse community in line with UHV’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion of underrepresented groups on campus; possess effective written communication skills and is comfortable in front of public; proven track record of effective delegation and personnel management and leadership; demonstrated leadership style with an emphasis on transparency, consultation, collaboration, and shared governance; demonstrated commitment to developing, empowering, and advocating for faculty and staff; demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration; demonstrated commitment to building and being a part of a well-aligned team; demonstrated student-centered focus; experience with current best practices in faculty, staff, and student recruitment and retention; experience with regional and disciplinary accreditation; and experience working with external stakeholders.
