Dean of the Faculty

Princeton University seeks an experienced, passionate, and dynamic leader to serve as its next Dean of the Faculty. Reporting to the President, the Dean of the Faculty holds primary responsibility for building and maintaining Princeton’s pre-eminent faculty, a body that excels not only in top-tier research but also in its commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching.

Responsibilities
The Dean of the Faculty is the third-ranking academic officer of the University and is charged, first and foremost, with sustaining the excellence, diversity, well-being, and professional integrity of the faculty. To this end, the Dean recruits, retains and counsels faculty; superintends faculty searches and the annual salary increase process; oversees faculty development, including the processes through which faculty are reappointed and promoted; helps faculty members transition to retirement; coordinates the selection of department chairs and mentors them on faculty management; coordinates the nomination and selection of faculty for awards and honors; recommends faculty members for election to University-wide committees and superintends the election process; oversees the policies that govern faculty responsibilities and conduct; superintends a range of compliance processes related to faculty misconduct; and endeavors to ensure that the University’s extraordinary faculty pursues its research and teaching mission both happily and effectively.

The Dean of the Faculty is also responsible for representing the faculty in processes overseen by the provost related to academic planning, programming and management, new initiatives, and resource allocation in academic units. Supporting these efforts, the Dean participates in the oversight of academic units and their teaching budgets; collaborates with the Dean for Research on the annual conflict of interest disclosure process; advises the provost on start-up and retention packages and other resources for faculty members; serves on the Academic Planning Group, which oversees the creation of new academic programs and initiatives; represents the interests of the faculty on a range of University-wide committees, including the Priorities Committee, the Benefits Committee, and the Housing Committee; and advocates for the faculty in discussions about strategic planning and the future of the University’s academic mission.

A successful candidate for the position should possess a rare combination of attributes:

  • the ability to recruit, retain, and work with world-class faculty members effectively.

  • a thorough commitment to the values of the University, including academic excellence and the diversification of the faculty.

  • the listening and problem-solving skills required to counsel faculty members and department chairs.

  • an interest in University processes and governance, especially as they affect the faculty.

  • the ability to collaborate collegially with partners in the administration and faculty members throughout the University, including an ability to work respectfully and effectively with staff in the dean’s office and elsewhere in the University.

  • a genuine pride in the quality and excellence of Princeton’s faculty; an affection for the many people and personalities comprehended within it; and an ability to take real joy from interactions with the faculty.
