Vice Provost for Institutional Effectiveness and Planning

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) seeks a forward-thinking strategist and analyst to serve as its first Vice Provost for Institutional Effectiveness and Planning. Building on a culture dedicated to continual innovation and renewal, the Vice Provost will join one of the country’s leading universities as it moves further into an era of data-informed self-evaluation in support of its mission and strategic goals. This individual will have the extraordinary opportunity to lead institutional effectiveness and planning within one of the most innovative and entrepreneurial institutions in higher education.  Over the past 50 years, the University has advanced dramatically and, in the current global context, is poised to set the standard for scholarship, education, and impact for the 21st century research university.

As a direct report to the Provost and a member of the University Leadership Committee and senior administration, the Vice Provost of Institutional Effectiveness and Planning will further enable a culture of data-informed decision-making across CMU. The Vice Provost will thoughtfully facilitate the use of data and analysis in both day-to-day operations and long-range strategic planning, as well as coordinating the participation in rankings for the University, Colleges, and Schools. This individual will interpret data for key constituents and think critically about questions essential to the University’s mission, thereby prompting improved data collection and data mining to ultimately help CMU assess progress and think strategically about future decisions. Additionally, this individual will help promote structures and policies for data governance and integrity.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in strategic planning, institutional research, program assessment, and/or data management and analytics. This person must have a record of collaborating across divisions and departments, as well as working with unstructured data to find the meaning behind observations. Exceptional communication skills and the ability to synthesize and present complex data in a clear, concise, and understandable manner are essential attributes for the role. Above all, the Vice Provost must have a deep commitment to educational success, the emotional intelligence to lead new initiatives in an engaged and passionate community, and a resonance with the mission of Carnegie Mellon University.  A Master’s degree in policy, economics, business, education, sociology, statistics, or other quantitative field is required, and a doctoral degree is preferred.
