A PhD degree in Computer Science or Electrical and Computer Engineering is preferred

The position will directly contribute to two major NSF-funded projects, as part of NSF Smart Connected Communities, and Cyber-Physical Systems programs. The postdoctoral researcher will directly contribute to the strategic vision of TeCSAR lab which is to bring the recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML) to address community challenges. While working directly with PI Hamed Tabkhi, she/he will get direct assistance from other Co-PIs and community partners to develop the scientific and technical skills necessary to carry out this research program. This includes contributing to algorithm development, computer system design, and methods for bringing back the processed information to community stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the mentorship of PI Hamed Tabkhi, the postdoctoral researcher will develop and teach courses in the context of real-time video analytics for both undergraduate and graduate levels. As the project manager, the postdoctoral researcher will also mentor Ph.D. and graduate students. He will also mentor senior design undergraduate students who will prototype the early models of the proposed technology in TeCSAR lab. As part of the mentorship, she/he will manage the weekly-based meetings with all graduate and undergraduate students involved in this project. Strong writing and verbal communication skills in the English language is a must. The postdoctoral researcher will be directly involved in scientific publications and paper writing in the context of edge computing and community-driven research. As a project manager, he/she will play a key role in outreach and presentation in both academic venues and community-based meetings. The post-doc researcher will attend relevant conferences to present the results and achievements of this project in top scientific venues. Furthermore, postdoc researcher will improve his/her ability to communicate research findings by presenting and obtaining feedback on their research at regularly scheduled lab meetings. PI Hamed Tabkhi will encourage postdocs to apply for independent research support, such as a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellowship. PI Tabkhi will provide guidance as they develop these grant applications. The postdoctoral researcher will have an opportunity to learn best practices in proposal preparation including identification of key research questions, the definition of objectives, description of approach and rationale, and construction of a work plan, timeline, and budget.

Other Work/Responsibilities:

A Postdoctoral Fellow (""postdoc"") is a professional apprenticeship designed to provide recent Ph.D. recipients with an opportunity to develop further the research skills acquired in their doctoral programs or to learn new research techniques, in preparation for an academic or research career. In the process of further developing their own research skills, it is expected that Postdoctoral Fellows will also play a significant role in the performance of research at the University and augment the role of graduate faculty in providing research instruction to graduate students. A Postdoctoral Fellow works under the supervision of a regular faculty member, who serves as a mentor to the Fellow, and it is expected that the faculty mentor will impart the realities, and variety, of scientific careers, and will encourage experiences outside the laboratory to broaden postdocs’ aspirations. Within the confines of the particular research focus assigned by that faculty member, the Postdoctoral Fellow functions with a considerable degree of independence and has the freedom (and is expected) to publish the results of his or her research or scholarship during the period of appointment. Thus, the role of Postdoctoral Fellows is clearly differentiated from full-time technical employees.

Postdoc appointments are characterized by all of the following conditions:

  • the appointee was recently (within the last eight years) awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., Sc.D., M.D.);
  • the appointment is temporary;
  • the appointment involves substantially full-time research or scholarship;
  • the appointment is viewed as preparatory for a full-time academic and/or research career;
  • the appointee works under the supervision of a faculty member; and
  • the appointee has the freedom and is expected to publish the results of his or her research or scholarship during the period of appointment.
