Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, the Clinical Laboratory Scientist performs an array of technical and team duties including specimen processing, specimen testing, phlebotomy, some reception and administrative, within a team of clinical laboratory scientists and phlebotomists.

The Clinical Laboratory Technologist assures the highest level of patient care and customer satisfaction in providing direct patient care and analytical assessment. The Clinical Laboratory Technologist performs the full range of laboratory testing on a regular basis with appropriate quality control activities and oversees procedures performed by the Laboratory Assistant. They uphold and adhere to all standards for quality control, quality assurance, and policy and procedures. Patient confidentiality in all verbal and written communications is essential. The employee must be professional, flexible and have the ability to multi-task with complex technology and service requirements

SPECIFIC DUTIES INCLUDE:

I. Lab Test Performance (75%)
A. Performs a variety of non-standardized and standardized clinical laboratory tests requiring professional judgment and experience.
B. Provides technical consultation to clinical and other laboratory staff.
C. Monitors test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
D. The Clinical Laboratory Technologist provides ongoing monitoring and certification of work conducted by the lab assistants
E. Assures that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate form the UHS lab performance specifications and that all systems function correctly for the release of patient results, in accordance with clinical quality standards and state and federal guidelines.
F. Assists in the assessment of new procedures / methods and the implementation of new techniques, equipment, and technology as appropriate.
G. Routinely performs and documents preventive maintenance, proficiency testing, quality control records, test worksheets and initiates actions as appropriate.
H. Evaluate patient results and correlate with other departments when indicated.

II. Specimen Procurement and Processing (10%)
A. Judges appropriateness of specimens in correlation with orders, judges quality of specimens and rejects those not acceptable, and handles specimens according to procedures.
B. Performs the duties of the Lab Assistant / Phlebotomist as required.
C. Performing specimen preparation and processing.

III. Other Duties (15%)
Performs other duties as assigned, which may include but are not limited to:
A. Training other personnel.
B. Evaluating methods and procedures.
C. Maintain, inventory, distribute and order supplies and reagents.
D. Participate actively on UHS committees as assigned


Required Qualifications

  • Current Clinical Laboratory Scientist License issued by the State of California.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Moderate computer skills and experience.
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Detail oriented with the ability to follow written and oral instruction
  • Excellent customer service and people skills.
  • Experience working with and demonstrating respect and inclusivity to diverse individuals and lifestyles.

    Other Information
    • 60% FTE (24 hours per week) career appointment
    • Employment is contingent on successful completion of: Background Check, Acceptable Medical Evaluation that includes infectious disease surveillance and proof of current required vaccinations or immunity levels, and successful credentials verification (if applicable).
    • This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Health Care Professionals Unit (HX) between the University of California and the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE).     This is a designated position requiring fingerprinting and a background check due to the nature of the job responsibilities.
